What are the responsibilities and job description for the Upper School History Teacher position at Northwest Ohio Classical Academy?
Northwest Ohio Classical Academy (NOCA) seeks a full-time Upper School History Teacher. The Upper School History Teacher is responsible for providing a rigorous and engaging history education to students in grades 7-12. This teacher will demonstrate high moral character, a deep mastery of history, and an enthusiasm for guiding students in their study of the past. Teachers will work collaboratively to create a safe, respectful, and intellectually stimulating environment for all students.
At NOCA, teachers understand and embrace the classical education model, prioritizing wonder, joy, and intellectual curiosity in the creation and delivery of all lessons. Students are active participants in their learning, engaging in thoughtful discussions and inquiry-based exploration. The teacher is responsible for leading the class, encouraging students to discover historical connections, reflect on the present, and form a deep understanding of the past.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Model the mission, philosophy, and virtues of the school: Demonstrate courage, moderation, justice, responsibility, friendship, prudence, and wisdom in all interactions.
- Develop the intellect and character of every student: Promote critical thinking, historical inquiry, and the development of good judgment through history lessons.
- Promote and participate in liberal arts and civic education: Teach students to appreciate the relationship between history, politics, philosophy, and human virtue.
- Create a safe and joyous environment for learning: Establish an engaging, respectful classroom environment that encourages curiosity and personal growth.
- Adhere to all NOCA policies: Follow the guidelines established in the Employee Handbook, Family Handbook, and any other relevant policies.
- Track and evaluate student progress: Maintain documentation on students' academic performance, attendance, and behavior. Assess students’ historical understanding and provide constructive feedback.
- Collaborate with the Intervention Specialist(s) and support staff: Develop and track Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with special needs and ensure their progress toward IEP goals.
- Provide direction and leadership in the classroom: Display a comprehensive understanding of historical content and use best practices in teaching, instructional techniques, and classroom management.
- Maintain student records: Keep accurate records of student grades, progress reports, and any required documentation as per state regulatory guidelines and NOCA policies.
- Collaborate with colleagues: Work with fellow teachers to plan, develop, and implement effective classical education practices aligned with the school’s goals.
- Participate in professional development: Engage in ongoing professional learning to support the needs of students and maintain the necessary teaching certifications.
- Other duties as assigned: Perform any additional responsibilities as requested by the Head of Upper School or administration.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in History, Education, or a related field.
- Certification/licensure in History or Social Studies from the Ohio Department of Education or a willingness to work toward obtaining licensure.
- Previous experience in classical education is preferred, but not required.

- Demonstrated ability to engage and inspire students in history and related subjects, sparking curiosity and passion for learning.

- Must clear a current background check through the BCI/FBI.
