What are the responsibilities and job description for the PART TIME MAINTENANCE - OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM position at Northwest Suburban Special Education Organization?
- Maintain cleanliness of buildings and grounds as directed for the purpose of maintaining a healthy environment.
- Maintain overall appearance and functioning of buildings/grounds/woods/lake as directed.
- Set up and move furnishings and equipment for the purpose of program equipment needs.
- Provide maintenance services including but not limited to mowing, carpet extraction and painting as directed to maintain the appearance and upkeep of the buildings and grounds.
- Provide snow removal as assigned during early work hours for the purpose of providing a safe entrance to the building for staff and students and then report to work at designated work hours.
- Remove waste and recyclables as directed for the purpose of maintaining a hazardous free environment utilizing district approved removal and storage procedures.
- Observe buildings/grounds/woods/lake and provide feedback to supervisor for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment and completing timely repairs.
- Provide light maintenance and repair as trained and directed by supervisor.
- Feed and care for birds, bees, fish and animals that provide interactive learning opportunities for students.
- Work over time when appropriate and approved by supervisor.
- Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the program.
- Provide effective security support, access and use of SLOEC.
- Act as a positive role model for students.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding work with special needs students.
- Support NSSEO policy, NSSEO and governing board goals and objectives, and The School Code of Illinois.
- Build, organize and care for teaching equipment and materials used by visiting and SLOEC teaching staff.
- Assist in the direct supervision of students who are under the supervision of a certified staff member as needed and directed.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students and staff.
- Demonstrate cooperation, openness for growth and a willingness to contribute as a team member who supports SLOEC’s experiential learning programs.
- Participate in and contribute to SLOEC staff meetings.
- Plan for and assist SLOEC volunteers in a variety of projects including the restoration of an Oak savanna ecosystem, expanding prairie areas that support student learning and development of lake care practices that ensure a healthy long-term water ecosystem.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to read, write and communicate in English to understand directions and communicate with supervisors, staff, and students.
- Able to physically move about the building and grounds and lift 30-80 lbs.
- Flexibility to report early for snow removal when needed and ability to physically complete snow removal efficiently
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate district vehicles
- Willing to perform cleaning, custodial, maintenance repairs, security, groundskeeping and landscaping work
- Ability to learn basic outdoor skills and to physically move around the outdoor area to supervise and participate in outdoor education activities.
- Ability to participate in NSSEO approved behavior management procedures, Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI) and to apply training in crisis situations including student restraints as needed. CPR, First Aid, Ice Rescue and Lifeguard training opportunities will be made available.
- Experience working in outdoor education and with students with special needs preferred.
- Ability to make minor decisions with minimal supervision in accordance with established procedures.
- Proficiency in Gmail and Google file sharing preferred.
