Description
The Controller is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Finance Department and ensures all financial transactions are made in accordance with nonprofit financial accounting standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities -
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Team Leadership and Management:
- Supervise and manage the Finance Team by setting clear expectations, assigning tasks, providing feedback, and ensuring employees meet performance goals.
- Manage administrative tasks such as processing bi-weekly timesheets, approving paid time off, and managing schedules for finance staff.
- Promote employee development through coaching, training, and providing growth opportunities within the team.
- Conduct performance reviews, address performance issues, and ensure a positive and productive work environment.
- Facilitate team coordination, resolve conflicts, and encourage teamwork to maintain high morale.
Finance Operations:
- Deliver timely reports and analysis on financial position, cash flow, revenues, and other financial information as may be requested by the CFO.
- Oversee monthly close and produce monthly and annual financial reports as needed; prepare and input journal entries and reconcile bank and other accounts.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts.
- Assist CFO in preparing and monitoring Museum budgets.
- Work with staff and external auditors to conduct annual audit.
- Work with CFO & COO to orchestrate annual insurance renewals.
- Oversee processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable and revenue recognition.
- Provide financial information to all department heads in developing and monitoring their annual budgets.
- Review bi-weekly payroll and provide payroll processing backup to HR when needed.
- Oversee daily cash handling and ensure that good internal controls for cash handling are in place and are being followed.
- Performs other job-related duties as requested.
Physical Requirements -
- The person in this position must be able move about inside and outside the office; to frequently communicate with managers and employees, ability to access and operate computer and other office equipment.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting
- Minimum 7 years – 10 years’ progressive experience in accounting
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
- Strong working knowledge of FASB regulations and their application to non-profit institutions
- Ability to detect errors and monitor own work to ensure quality
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge software preferred
