Position Overview
The Middle School Teacher serves as the lead instructor in the Alternatives to Suspension Program at Langston, providing direct instruction, behavioral support, and academic intervention for students in grades 6–8. This position is grant funded for one year and reports to the Director of Alternative and Adult Education Programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide high-quality instruction aligned to grade-level standards and individualized student needs.
· Develop and maintain a classroom environment that promotes respect, engagement, and a culture of learning.
· Implement instructional and behavioral strategies to support students returning from suspension or at risk of suspension.
· Collaborate with school counselors, behavior specialists, and other support staff to ensure wraparound services are in place.
· Establish clear expectations and consistent routines that promote accountability and student success.
· Monitor and document academic progress, behavior, and student goals; prepare reports and maintain student records.
· Supervise students in classroom, hallway, restroom, and transitions in a structured and positive manner.
· Build relationships with students and families to foster trust, motivation, and sustained engagement in school.
· Participate in professional development related to trauma-informed practices, social-emotional learning, and behavior management.
· Communicate regularly with families, school personnel, and community partners.
· Attend staff meetings, division trainings, and other assigned duties that support program goals.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with students who have experienced behavioral challenges.
· Strong classroom management and conflict-resolution skills.
· Ability to develop and implement differentiated instruction to meet diverse academic needs.
· Familiarity with trauma-informed practices, restorative justice, and social-emotional learning is a plus.
· Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Education and Experience Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
· Valid Virginia teaching license or eligibility for licensure.
· Experience working with middle school students in alternative, special education, or high-needs settings preferred.
