We are excited to add a 7th and 8th grade Humanities teacher to our dynamic group of kind, committed, and thoughtful teachers. Our small teaching staff works to collaborate across subjects to create interdisciplinary and fun learning, while our enrichment program allows teachers to find different interesting topics to cover in smaller groups around personal passions and interests.

Are you ready to join our dedicated team in making a difference in the lives of highly capable middle schoolers? As one of two Advanced Humanities teachers, you will work closely with multi-aged groups of students to combine Language Arts and History in a block schedule. We are interested in having this position also teach debate and mock trial as part of our enrichment program. This position will also be part of a small group of teachers assisting 8th graders with their capstone projects.

About NOVA Middle School

NOVA Middle School is an independent school serving highly capable/gifted learners in Olympia, WA. We serve just over 100 students in 6th-8th grades and are intentionally small. We believe the middle school years are transformative in students’ schooling so we offer a safe nurturing space where students feel comfortable and confident exploring their intellectual, social, and emotional lives. Our students are often problem solvers, motivated, creative, curious, empathetic, kind, intelligent, quirky, and yes, sometimes intense, sensitive, emotional, disorganized, and more. We want students to be unabashedly themselves.

Position Overview: We are looking for a full-time Humanities Teacher who will contribute to our school's mission by bringing creativity and cultural competency. This role involves collaborating with a team of educators and engaging with diverse students to create a supportive and engaging learning environment.

Key Responsibilities: As a member of our faculty, you will:

  • Design and Deliver Curriculum: Develop and implement the NOVA Humanities Program's curriculum, ensuring it aligns with national and state standards and meets our students' evolving educational needs.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work with NOVA faculty to integrate humanities with other subjects, enriching students' learning experiences.
  • Classroom Management: Prepare and maintain the classroom, including setup and cleanup before and after classes.
  • Assess and Report: Evaluate student progress, contribute to progress reports, and participate in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Promote Social-Emotional Learning: Foster positive relationships, encourage creative thinking, and use social-emotional frameworks to support a respectful and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Engage with the Community: Build strong relationships with students, colleagues, and families to support a vibrant learning community.
  • Administrative Duties: Efficiently manage tasks such as writing reports, planning field trips, communicating with parents, and maintaining an inviting classroom.
  • Professional Growth: Participate in ongoing professional development and collaborate on shared projects with other faculty members.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience: At least two years of experience teaching language arts and/or history to middle school-aged children.
  • Skills and Attitudes: Passion for teaching, love of learning, and enthusiasm for collaboration along with a commitment to child-centered pedagogical practices with a healthy dose of fun and proficiency with traditional and digital tools.
  • Communication: Strong oral, written, and non-verbal communication, rooted in curiosity and conviction.
  • Cultural Competency: A deep respect for diverse cultural values, beliefs, and practices and a desire to give students a look at diverse aspects of the humanities fields.
  • Commitment: Dedication to the practices of self-reflection, collegiality, and professionalism.
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree and a teaching certificate.

Benefits/Culture:

$60,000-70,000 depending on experience and degree.
