Lutherock Maintenance/Grounds Technician Job Description

NovusWay Ministries (NovusWay, Inc.) is a progressive and growing outdoor ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It includes the camps and conferencing centers of Lutherock, Lutheridge, Luther Springs, and Lutheranch, located across the southeastern United States. Lutherock Camp and Conference Center, located in Newland, North Carolina, is close to Grandfather Mountain, Boone, Linville, and major ski attractions like Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain.

Qualifications

The Lutherock Maintenance/Grounds Technician shall be committed to Jesus Christ and the church, dedicated to working within a church-related organization. He/she should have a growing understanding and appreciation for the unique ministry of church camps and conferencing centers. A solid working knowledge of grounds equipment, including its care and preventive maintenance, is required, and training on safe operational practices will be provided. The ideal candidate should enjoy handling a variety of tasks, pay attention to detail, and possess a strong work ethic. The position may require weekend work, as well as on-call duties.

General Responsibilities

The Lutherock Maintenance/Grounds Technician will be responsible for the care and upkeep of the Lutherock campus, ensuring a positive experience for guests. This position reports directly to the Lutherock Camp Director and is part of the operations team. The role requires the ability to see the job as part of the ministry and exhibit a commitment to teamwork.

Specific Responsibilities

The duties of the Lutherock Maintenance/Grounds Technician include, but are not limited to:

General Maintenance

• Electrical and plumbing repairs
• Carpentry
• General preventive upkeep (light bulbs, filters, gutters, etc.)
• Performing work orders
• Coordinating trash removal across the site
• Operating tractors and chainsaws
• Handling general contracting and repair work as needed
• Ability to manage tasks or hire out work in coordination with the Lutherock Camp Director

Groundskeeping

• Mowing and weed-eating
• Mulching playgrounds and ropes courses
• Weeding, mulching, and maintaining flower beds
• Clearing trails
• Cutting and distributing firewood to buildings
• Blowing leaves and debris from walkways, porches, roofs, and roads
• Cleaning gutters
• Staining & Painting
• Maintaining roadsides by clearing trash and debris
• Assisting with snow removal on roads and walkways

Additional Responsibilities

The Lutherock Maintenance/Grounds Technician will be trained for on-call weekend duties as needed and is expected to assist with other tasks required to support the Lutherock site and NovusWay Ministries in its mission.

Support

An annual performance review will be conducted by the Lutherock Camp Director. The Lutherock Maintenance/Grounds Technician will work together with Lutherock Camp Director to form maintenance plan.

Compensation and Benefits

• This is a year-round, PRN, hourly position, not to exceed 20 hours weekly. Overtime is allowed only at the direction of the Lutherock Camp Director.
• This is a non-exempt, Level V position.
• Paid time off and annual continuing education will be provided according to the NovusWay personnel policies.
