LOCATION: Onsite, Fairfax VA
SUMMARY: Assists with the management of and provides editorial support essential to the daily operation of AMERICAN RIFLEMAN magazine and associated properties. Ensures that all work satisfies established quality standards and policies, and meets monthly and seasonal production deadlines. Supervises Assistant and Associate editors.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assists with the management and daily operation of AMERICAN RIFLEMAN magazine, americanrifleman.org and American Rifleman Television (ARTV).
2. Writes and edits bylined and non-bylined features, departments and columns for AMERICAN RIFLEMAN, including both general shooting sports articles and NRA official material.
3. Generates written and video content for americanrifleman.org, in conjunction with Executive Editor, including: weekly Armed Citizen columns, ARTV descriptions, Gun Of The Week scripts, web exclusive articles and news briefs.
4. Coordinates, writes and serves as primary editor for the monthly AMERICAN RIFLEMAN “Reports” section.
5. Acts as facilitating editor with staff, contract and freelance feature authors and photographers.
6. Proofreads all copy during various stages of production.
7. Writes headlines and captions for feature stories and column material.
8. Directs the preparation of editorial material for electronic page make-up for articles and columns assigned.
9. Produces and edits video and editorial content for www.americanrifleman.org. and develops strategies for digital growth in conjunction with Executive Editor
10. Participates in ARTV filming sessions/interviews.
11. Corresponds by mail and telephone with NRA members, writers, photographers, advertising representatives and shooting sports companies.
12. Supervises Associate Editor and Assistant Editor, AMERICAN RIFLEMAN, and trains and monitors performance.
13. Ensures that editorial content of the magazine and television show is consistent with NRA policy and Bylaws.
14. Acts as liaison with other NRA divisions, the firearm industry and advertising representatives.
15. Responsible for editorial decisions in the absence of the Editor in Chief, Senior Executive Editor and Executive Editor.
16. Travels as assigned to generate written and photographic content and to represent AMERICAN RIFLEMAN at industry events such as SHOT show, NRAAM, hunts and factory tours.
17. Extended hours required; other duties as assigned.
SCOPE: Coordinates primarily with Editorial and Design staffs of AMERICAN RIFLEMAN, as well as with Photography and Production & Advertising Operations staffs. Also coordinates with other departments within NRA Publications and other NRA divisions. Coordinates and manages seasonal production of AMERICAN RIFLEMAN Television. Coordinates with AMERICAN RIFLEMAN Television production company, the television network and other NRA divisions. Frequent contact with members, government agencies, firearm industry and shooting sports organizations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Arts degree in English or Journalism, or equivalent work experience. Minimum five years managerial experience in firearm journalism. Working knowledge of firearms, shooting, handloading and Second Amendment issue necessary. Familiarity with television and video production necessary.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Effective managerial, supervisory and editorial skills necessary. Ability to write clearly and concisely. Knowledge of magazine design and production. Skilled photographer and knowledgeable in photo reproduction. Working knowledge of word processing packages and electronic publishing necessary. Ability to determine technical accuracy and content of photos. Ability to foster and maintain cooperation and coordination among all department personnel in producing the magazine and television show. Ability to make rapid, accurate decisions; work under pressure to meet deadlines; and supervise several projects simultaneously. Attention to detail and organization essential.
