A day in the life of an Underground Principal Engineer at NTH
- Oversee projects or project components, ensuring efficient resource allocation, managing analysis and design phases, and maintaining the integrity of the overall design, quality assurance, and client satisfaction.
- Perform geotechnical and structural analysis, design, and documentation for projects involving interdisciplinary teams. Responsibilities include research, system selection, analysis, and preparation of drawings and specifications in compliance with industry standards.
- Develop or review project-specific design and calculation packages, including construction cost estimate.
- Supervise or perform monitoring of construction operations, including earthwork and excavation support installations and preparing engineering field reports. Coordinate construction quality control services, conduct periodic site visits, and review daily field reports prepared by others.
- Prepare technical proposals and fee estimates.
- Provide training and mentoring to junior staff members.
Requirements
- Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering (emphasis on Structural or Geotechnical Engineering), from a 4-year accredited college or university.
- Professional registration required.
- Minimum 15 years of demonstrated experience in Structural Engineering or Geo-Structural Engineering.
- Experience in project planning, budgeting, and task management to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of structural and geotechnical design principles, along with proficiency in applicable codes and standards. Expertise in soil-structure interaction and extensive experience in conducting structural and geotechnical analysis and design calculations for underground and underwater structures. Experience with analysis and design of shoreline and/or marine structures, including seawalls, jetties, piers, and water intake structures, is desirable.
- Proficient in using structural and geotechnical analysis/design software(s).
- Experience in preparing and reviewing engineering evaluation reports, specifications, and drawings.
- Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel to and conduct field work at job sites/offices in Michigan.
