LINEMAN PRE-APPRENTICE (7023)
This position is intended to provide the basic skills and education in order to successfully enter the Company's Apprentice Lineman Program. A pre-apprentice will be required to bid on an Apprentice Lineman vacancy no later than the completion of the two year pre-apprentice program. A qualified Pre-Apprentice Lineman who does not successfully bid and obtain an Apprentice position shall be terminated. The Company shall consider that they have voluntarily resigned from their position.

The pre-apprentice is expected to learn the pre-requisite skills and gain knowledge in order to become an Apprentice Lineman. Will be required to successfully complete the Company provided pre-apprenticeship training program, which includes formal training, job evaluations and on the job training. The evaluation will include work skills, behaviors, communication skills and teamwork. The candidate must pass training that include and are not limited to:

  • basic electricity
  • basic rigging and other physical skills requirements
  • safety in the workplace
  • CDL Class A

Employees in this position will complete a 12 month probationary period.

The pre-apprentice program is a two year program. After two years, the employee will be expected to achieve and progress into a posted apprentice position and will serve a twelve month company probation in the newly acquired apprentice position. Failure to successfully progress into a lines apprentice position will be grounds for termination from the Company. If the lack of progression is due to the Company not having lineman apprentice vacancies, then the Company will allow a
grace period providing the employee has been qualified to advance into an apprentice program by successfully completing the program within two years. If the pre-apprentice is an existing Company employee and the employee is unsuccessful in completing the program, the employee may request to go back to their prior position classification and department, providing a vacancy exists. If a vacancy is not available, the employee may be considered for other vacancies in the Company.

The pre-apprentice will perform semi-skilled work while assisting a Journeyman or Apprentice. The work will include the use of hand and portable power tools under the direction of a journeyman.

The pre-apprentice, under direction of a journeyman, assist in setting up of overhead transmission lines and overhead and underground distribution lines, construction and maintenance of substations; and will perform other miscellaneous semi-skilled work. At no time will a pre apprentice be allowed to work on energized equipment or lines. The employee may be required to perform the following duties:

  • field clerical duties for various crews
  • drive a truck and maneuver it at the job site
  • assist with ground work and keep job site clean
  • use a computer
  • maintain tools and materials on truck in good order
  • operate associated equipment on the truck
  • pre-apprentice will learn and must demonstrate thorough assessments an on the job training the following knowledge and following tasks:
  • general safety and tailboard briefing
  • capable of working at elevated levels
  • knowledge and retention of the applicable code of safe practices rules
  • knowledge and use of personal protective equipment
  • use and maintenance of various hand tools and equipment
  • dig holes and trenches by hand
  • identify and work with electrical line equipment
  • obtain class A license
  • drive a class A vehicle
  • basic electricity fundamentals
  • work with rope; splicing, knot tying etc
  • basic rigging skills and calculations
  • and will perform any other duties as assigned and can safely perform
  • ability to comprehend complex sets of instructions and carry out tasks with minimal errors
  • must be able to work as a team player
  • communicate effectively

Must pass all five WorkKeys tests prior to requisition posting expiration date in order to be considered for the position.

Once a candidate enters the pre-apprentice lines position, they are not eligible to pursue interest in another pre-apprentice program that might be posted.

Upon development of the CSN Utility Education program, internal and external candidates will be given credit and priority for having completed that course work during the interview process. Specific screening criteria and assessments will be developed by the Joint Apprentice Training Committee.

Requirements


In order to be considered for any apprenticeship position, you must have successfully completed all five (5) ACT Work Keys exams by obtaining a minimum score as indicated below. Upon application and prior to the posting expiration date, you must attach ACT Work Keys transcripts providing evidence of minimum Work Keys scores. Failure to provide satisfactory evidence or obtain the minimum required scores within the specified timeframe will result in your bid not being considered.

ACT Work Keys Minimum Scores Required:

  • Workplace Observation – 2
  • Workplace Documents (formally named Reading for Information) – 5
  • Graphic Literacy (formally named Locating Information) – 4
  • Applied Math – 5
  • Applied Technology – 4

Additional Requirements


This position is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) under Title 49 CFR Part 382 and Part 40. Any applicant/employee who is licensed and would operate a commercial vehicle for the Company will be subject to drug and alcohol testing under the Company’s FMCSA drug and alcohol testing programs. Any employment, transfer, or promotion offer made for this position is contingent upon taking and passing a drug test prior to the commencement of the new role. If an applicant/employee fails the drug test, any offer of employment, transfer, or promotion will be revoked.

Compensation


$26.65 to $34.02 per hour. Potential Safety Bonus 2%. The company reserves the right to determine the number of positions awarded for this requisition.
