Northern Virginia Family Service’s (NVFS) Hunger Resource Center (HRC) is located on the agency’s SERVE campus in Manassas, VA. The HRC is an 8,800 square foot facility that provides emergency food to over 10,000 low-income families each year. In addition to the provision of emergency food, the HRC houses SNAP Outreach and Nutrition Education staff and employees whose focus is on advocacy and the expansion of the federal nutrition programs in greater Prince William County. The HRC provides resources and support to various programs at NVFS.
The HRC team is dependent upon reliable, hardworking and collaborative members to do the work that sustains HRC’s operations. The Hunger Relief Operations Associate plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth daily operation of the HRC, which encompasses many moving parts and physical labor. This role provides the opportunity to make a direct impact in the lives of many individuals and families affected by food insecurity and hunger, while learning about customer service, merchandising, database entry, building relationships with suppliers, and managing volunteers.
Join the NVFS Family: We are looking to hire a Hunger Relief Operations Associate to join the Hunger Resource Center team! The Associate is responsible for supporting all aspects of food collection, stocking and distribution to address food insecurity in the community; this includes driving agency vehicles to conduct food donation pickups throughout the community and with food suppliers. The Associate will also work as a part of a team rotation performing client intake and referrals according to the HRC’s intake operational schedule.

In this role, you will be responsible for:
Intake & Referral:
- Participate on a team rotation to perform client intake during specific days/shifts per HRC operations, as assigned.
- Conduct initial HRC screening process to determine eligibility for program services, providing assessment, intake and enrollment where appropriate.
- Implement a seamless and efficient intake and referral process with a customer-centric approach; work in collaboration with other program case managers to support wraparound services where the need is identified.
- Responsible for the flow and management of all potential client calls.
- Maintain information and referral data log, client waiting list and data input into approved NVFS software. Maintain and perform data entry to ensure that client data is unduplicated.
Food Stocking & Distribution:
- Stock HRC shelves, freezers and refrigerators in a timely manner.
- Consistently maintain good stock rotation procedures to ensure items get rotated according to schedule in a timely fashion; this includes all perishable, frozen and non-perishable products.
- Conduct food donation pickups throughout the Prince William area.
- Drive agency vehicles to conduct single and multi-site pick-ups from various donors throughout the Prince William area; may require to ride along with other assigned drivers at times in order to support pick-ups and unloading.
- Load inventory/products onto the trucks.
- Unload trucks upon return to the HRC.
- Process all food donations which includes:
- Sorting and weighing the items.
- Updating and maintaining inventory.
- Providing donor/vendor receipts.
- Moving and properly storing the inventory/product donations.
- Ensure that HRC client area is stocked in a timely manner and that items are ready for distribution to clients.
- Conduct US Foods donation pickups four (4) days a week. These are physically and time intensive pickups which require:
- Loading a large volume of items at US Foods.
- Unloading all items at HRC.
- Weighing, sorting and placing the inventory in the warehouse.
- Work collaboratively with SERVE Shelter’s kitchen staff to ensure that food on the shelter’s menu is available.
- Pull the food items needed by them daily.
- Weigh food and other items being pulled.
- Account for the reduction in inventory by updating food tracking.
- Support all aspects of always ensuring and maintaining cleanliness of the HRC; this may include, but is not limited to cleaning of warehouse/refrigerator/freezer shelves, wiping spills, cleaning the floor, etc. Alert manager on duty of any issues or safety concerns.
- Assist in maintenance of agency vehicles which may include servicing vehicles for oil changes and gas fill up. Alert manager on duty of any issues or safety concerns.
- Assist with all seasonal programs, such as Operation Turkey, Holiday Giving and Kids Summer project.
- Work collaboratively with volunteers and interns assigned to work in the HRC.

- High School diploma or GED
- Must be reliable and punctual to ensure timely shift coverage
- Demonstrated customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate in a friendly manner to a diverse population of clients, vendors/suppliers, volunteers, and staff
- Related experience in a warehouse or food distribution setting a plus
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
- Ability to respond to stressful situations in a flexible and professional manner
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English; Spanish language skills a plus
- Proficiency in usage of basic technological tools including laptops/computers, email, phones, and internet; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Additional Requirements:
- Successful completion of background checks required upon hire
- Must clear Motor Vehicle Record check and have a valid U.S. driver’s license in order to drive Agency vehicles upon hire
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as pertaining to HRC operation hours
- Must be able to lift at least 75 pounds
