YOUTH CAMP DIRECTOR

LOCATION: Newtown, CT

REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
STATUS: Part Time/ Full Time/ Seasonal
POSITION SUMMARY:
The NYA Sports & Fitness Center hosts a variety of Youth Camp programs for grades K – 6, throughout the year. When school is in session we offer 1-day camps on school holidays (i.e. Election Day, MLK Day, etc.), a week long Spring Break Camp, and ½ day camps on early dismissal days. During the Summer NYA runs 9 Sessions of full-week Summer Camps. All Youth Camp programs consist of sports games and activities – similar to PE class in school.
The Youth Camp Director/Lead Coach is responsible for planning, leading, and executing the camp activities and schedule for each day; ensuring the children have a positive, enjoyable, and safe experience. Responsibilities also include leading and supervising the Youth Camp Counselor staff assigned to support running the games and activities.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
- Plans, leads, and implements camp programs for children
- Provides high-quality recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants
- Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being
- Maintains a schedule for camp participants
- Facilitates and creates lesson plans for daily activities
- Organizes and leads various small and large group activities
- Ensures cleanliness of the site
- Assists in maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance
- Knows and understands all emergency procedures associated with the camp program
- Records and tracks camper’s dietary restrictions/allergies and ensures that the meals/snacks are distributed to them
- Mediates campers’ disputes
- Knows, enforces, and follows all safety guidelines associated with the camp program
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of a variety of recreational and athletic activities; knowledge of basic sports skills and instruction; and knowledge of sports rules and regulations
- Ability to direct and supervise support staff
- Ability to plan and execute an engaging and effective daily schedule of activities
- Ability to communicate well with children ages 5-12 years and their parents
- Ability to lead and involve campers in various sports and recreation activities
- Ability to provide first aid and emotional support and assistance to children ages 5 -12
- At least two years of experience in a day camp, sports camp, or school setting working with children
- CPR and first aid certifications required

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds waist high
- May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time whether indoors or outdoors, and squat, stoop or bend into awkward positions while performing job functions.
- Employees at outdoor sites are exposed to loud noise levels, hot temperatures or other environmental factors.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
