Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Central Parent Advocate, the Family Support Coordinator will maintain, promote, and coordinate activities for parents and families of students with IEPs attending school in New York City. The Family Support Coordinator supports the Central Parent Advocate in scheduling meetings and developing communications within the Family Engagement Team and with other educational partners, including students with IEPs, their families, and staff.
The Special Education Office focuses on initiatives and programs for students with disabilities, their families, and the educational stakeholders who serve them. The Family Support Coordinator is expected to perform tasks as assigned, including special projects. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Maintains positive professional relationships within the Special Education Office, and with superintendent teams, school communities, agencies, students, families, and educational partners and relevant stakeholders.

$60,733 (New Hire Rate)
$69,844 - $80,000 (Incumbent - 2 years of full-time continuous City service)

Responsibilities
- As a representative of the special education office’s Family Engagement Team, plan for and execute FACSE (Family, Community, and Student Empowerment) events ensuring alignment with community needs and organizational goals.
- Organize school family resource events, serving as a central point for families to access special education-related resources and support for students with IEPs.
- Manage logistics for staff trainings and workshop events hosted by the Family Engagement Team, including scheduling, material preparation, and follow-up evaluations.
- Represent the special education office in the IEP Parent Member work, collaborating closely with INCLUDEnyc or designated FACSE center (as determined by NYSED).
- Serve as a liaison between IEP parent members and school-based teams, as needed, ensuring clear and effective communication.
- Facilitate connections between school-based IEP teams and CSEs (Committees on Special Education) with parent directories to enhance collaboration and raise awareness of the IEP Parent Member program.
- Address and coordinate responses to questions from parent councils, providing timely and accurate information.
- Schedule and coordinate meetings with internal teams and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment of priorities and efficient use of time.
- Assist in arranging meetings and follow ups for council presidents and relevant parties, maintaining clear communication and timely updates.
- Conduct school visits to foster relationships with staff, parents, and students with IEPs, and identify areas of need for additional support.
- Collaborate with school staff to address family concerns and improve special education engagement strategies.
Minimum
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.
- Baccalaureate degree in the field of Human Services or Education.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Highly motivated, self-directed team player with a history of success.
- Able to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment, and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications.
- Familiarity with NYC Public Schools.
- Strong organizational skills; ability to organize data from multiple data sources.
- Ability to work and function as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, as needed.
