The Civilian Complaint Review Board (“CCRB”) is charged with investigating, mediating, and prosecuting complaints which members of the public file against New York City police officers alleging the use of force, abuse of authority, discourtesy, offensive language, untruthful statements made by officers, and racial profiling and biased policing. The Board consists of 15 members who are appointed by the Mayor, the City Council and Public Advocate or designated by the police commissioner. The Board is responsible for governing the agency. The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the agency. As the largest police oversight agency in the United States, the CCRB currently investigates approximately 4,500 complaints each year.

About The Mediation Scheduling Squad

As part of the re-organization of the Investigations Division, the Mediation Scheduling Squad will be charged with coordinating, scheduling, processing, and other administrative tasks related to facilitating alternative dispute resolution proceedings involving civilians with mediation-eligible complaints against NYPD Members of Service.

RESPONSIBILITIES: MEDIATION SCHEDULER

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief of Investigations or designee, Mediation Schedulers are entry-level staff members that will be responsible for some or all of the following:

  • Understand, embrace, and effectively communicate the CCRB’s mission and the role that Alternative Dispute Resolution plays in advancing the agency’s mission.
  • Interact with civilians, Members of Service, and colleagues in a professional, courteous, and mission-driven manner.
  • Receive and process referrals of mediation-eligible cases from investigators.
  • Initiate and maintain effective communication with civilians, Members of Service, and other stakeholders to establish or confirm their desire to participate in alternative dispute resolution (mediation) and to keep all parties apprised of the status of their case in the lead-up to the mediation.
  • Liaise with mediators and involved parties to coordinate schedules for mediations.
  • Respond in a professional and timely manner to telephone calls and other inquiries from parties seeking information on the status of their mediation-eligible case.
  • Produce reports and respond to requests for information from the Board, the Executive Director, the Chief of Investigations, or designees about the Mediation Scheduling Squad’s docket, individual Mediations Schedulers’ dockets, or about individual mediation-eligible cases.
  • Ensure that matters that are not mediated successfully are returned to investigators.
  • Handle confidential materials in a professional, trustworthy, discreet and confidential manner.
  • Perform various data entry tasks.
  • Design, implement and maintain file organization system.
  • Copy, scan, store and dispose of files and documents as needed.
  • Participate in individual and collaborative problem-solving to advance mediation-eligible cases in an expeditious manner consistent with the agency’s mission.
  • Other tasks as may be directed by the Board, the Executive Director, the Chief of Investigations, or designees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university

Preferred Skills

PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE - Bilingual or multi-lingual. - One year of clerical or equivalent experience. - Keyboard familiarity with the ability to type at a minimum of 100 key strokes (20 words) per minute. REQUIRED TRAITS & SKILLS - Positive attitude. - Commitment to the CCRB’s core mission. - Proactive nature, persistence, and grit. - Strong oral and written communication skills. - Problem-solving skills. - Attention to detail. - Professionalism, sound judgement, discretion, and integrity. - Time management, organization and planning skills and capacity to multi-task. - Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of tools, with emphasis out Outlook scheduling. - Ability to work in a fast paced, demanding environment.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
