Engineering Materials Analyst Trainee 1
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
A bachelor's or higher degree in biochemistry, biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, environmental science, geology, geophysics, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics; including or supplemented by 12 semester credit hours in chemistry, materials science, or strength of materials.
Engineering Materials Analyst Trainee 2
A bachelor's or higher degree in biochemistry, biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, environmental science, geology, geophysics, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics; including or supplemented by 12 semester credit hours in chemistry, materials science, or strength of materials and one year of experience* performing quality control and/or quality assurance testing of materials for highway, building, or structural construction and maintenance.
Senior Engineering Materials Analyst
A bachelor's or higher degree in biochemistry, biology, chemical engineering, chemistry, civil engineering, environmental science, geology, geophysics, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics; including or supplemented by 12 semester credit hours in chemistry, materials science, or strength of materials and two years of experience* performing quality control and/or quality assurance testing of materials for highway, building, or structural construction and maintenance.
If chosen, you may, at the agency's discretion, be appointed to a higher level. You must inform the agency of any additional qualifications at your interview.
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate
Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Additional Comments
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While
serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

- Identifying and logging incoming samples into computer software program.
- Preparing samples and conducting standard tests.
- Conducting complex tests on specialized materials.
- Recording test data and calculating test results.
- Maintaining test equipment and a clean work area.
- Following and/or ensuring staff is knowledgeable of, and practices safety procedures.
- Communicating with engineering staff and other sections concerning test results.
- Maintaining testing deadlines and priorities.
- Assigning testing responsibilities and determining priorities.
- Ensuring samples are testing in accordance with appropriate testing procedures.
- Assisting in developing new, or revising existing test specifications.
- Reviewing and developing test result reports, as well as technical correspondence.
- Overseeing quality assurance (QA) procedures for engineering materials.
- Coordinating sampling and inspections activities with private inspection agencies, as well as other
- Training and developing Department staff.
- May supervise and train subordinate technical staff engaged in performing standardized tests.
- Performing other duties, as required.
