­­Overview:

We are seeking an Enrichment Technology Performance Assurance Specialist to join the Performance Assurance Group within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division’s (ESED) Systems & Process Assurance (SPA) Section! ESED is one of four Divisions of the Isotope Science and Enrichment Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

ESED serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring enriched stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of ORNL to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments.

The SPA Section provides division-wide services supporting the strategic advancement of research & development for prototype enrichment devices processing uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds. The Performance Assurance Group is responsible for the management of, and services related to:

  • Issues Management (Noncompliances and Nonconformances).
  • R&D-related Technical Experiences & Events.
  • Training.
  • Secure Operations.
  • Work Process Adherence and Improvement.
  • Metrics & Trending.
  • Lessons Learned.
  • Culture & Continuous Improvement Initiatives.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will support staff including engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain management; line managers; program and project managers; and quality assurance representatives, by ensuring the development, implementation, and execution of work processes enabling secure, efficient, and effective maturation through both technology and manufacturing readiness levels.

It is expected that the successful candidate will drive performance improvement, serving as an ambassador for safety, security, and quality through collaboration and coordination with division staff and leadership.

Responsibilities include:

  • Process Coordination:
    • Serve as coordinator to expedite process execution (e.g., NCR identification and disposition), ensuring appropriate evidence is captured and retrievable.
    • Review work process documentation to ensure appropriate flowdown of requirements, interface and collaboration, process adherence, and completeness.
    • Coordinate with external organizations including the Quality Assurance Division, Office of Integrated Performance Management, and the Laboratory Protection Division to seek external expertise, foster collaboration, and ensure ESED meets or exceeds process and performance expectations.


  • Culture/Continuous Improvement:
    • Facilitate a healthy reporting culture focused on collaboration and successful mission execution.
    • Perform assessments, critiques, and causal analyses.
    • Contribute to lean manufacturing initiatives, sustainability efforts, and continuous improvement projects to enhance efficiency.
    • Facilitate timely resolution of identified noncompliances and nonconformances.
    • Support division staff in developing and tracking performance metrics.


  • Security Operations:
    • Provide assistance with communicating security procedures to staff in the areas of Operational Security (OPSEC) and Information Protection.
    • Understand and maintain classified matter protection and control requirements.
    • Assist with the response to and communication of Incidents of Security Concern (IOSCs).
    • Coordinate ESED security training and completion tracking.
    • Support physical security assessments of ESED spaces.
    • Serve as a liaison between LPD and ESED staff.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree and 2-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Active DOE Q Security Clearance.
  • Experience with procedure development, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Experience supporting multiple teams within a large multiprogram environment.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience collaborating across diverse teams and facilitating compliance with organizational standards.
  • Experience with the marking, handling, and storage requirements of sensitive documents (e.g., CUI, ECI, UCNI, CRD, SRD).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS degree and 1–4 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodologies or other process improvement techniques.
  • Familiarity with compliance standards related to Quality Assurance, Security, Engineering, Supply Chain Management, and Manufacturing.
  • Experience within the isotope enrichment industry.
  • Understanding of and experience with DOE O 413.3, ISO 9001, and NQA-1.

Special Requirements:

Q Clearance:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
