Overview:
We are seeking a candidate to work on and execute experiments on advanced manufacturing (AM) equipment such as powder bed metal systems and directed energy deposition systems. The candidate will support technical staff in conducting high quality research on materials processed through AM. A background of previous hands-on activities manufacturing related activities is preferred. Strong communication and organization skills are required. This position resides in the Deposition Science and Technology Group at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) in the Manufacturing Sciences Division (MSD), Energy Sciences and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our research team, you will be based at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) and work alongside a diverse team of scientists on the development of materials and equipment and processing techniques for reliability of AM processes through in-situ process monitoring, data analytics, and routine machine maintenance. You will be expected to perform tasks supporting technical staff leading research programs in additive manufacturing, utilize software tools to document data for reports and presentations, while performing collaborative work efforts to meet project milestones.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform manufacturing tasks under direction of principle investigators
- Maintaining additive manufacturing printers
- Executing set-up and experiments on additive manufacturing printers
- Maintaining an orderly laboratory space and inventory of materials and consumables
- Maintain proper documentation and logs of work conducted on the AM printers and of experiments
- Communicate frequently and effectively to all team members
- Characterize samples by standard metallography techniques as needed to support greater research activities
- Compile and report results of AM builds and equipment status to team mebers
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
- Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Hands on experience with traditional manufacturing equipment (e.g. lathe, mills, etc.)
- Experience working and maintaining machinery/equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to fundamentals of additive manufacturing systems (polymers or metals)
- Associates Degree
- Experience working on and maintaining industrial manufacturing equipment
- Experience in characterization of metal alloys
- Hands on experience with additive manufacturing systems
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs

Salary : $43,800 - $55,500
