Oakwood School is seeking a long-term substitute teacher for middle school to join our team starting February 2025. This temporary role will encompass the responsibilities of a classroom teacher through the end of the academic year.
Oakwood serves bright students in grades 1-8 with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. Our approach centers on small class sizes, multisensory teaching, and individualized instruction. Each classroom has two teachers for 10-13 homeroom students, allowing for differentiated instruction and a collaborative work environment. With approximately 115 students, 22 classroom teachers, and a robust team of academic coaches and leaders, we are committed to fostering a supportive environment for students and staff.
As the Long-Term Substitute, you will:
- Team-teach social studies to a single group of sixteen 7th-grade students.
- Independently teach reading, writing, and math to a small group of up to seven students in 6th and 7th grades.
- Participate in weekly collaboration meetings with cohort teachers and academic leadership to ensure cohesive and effective instruction.
- Lesson plan and teach with support from current academic leadership.
- Engage with students and families through regular communication and progress updates.
- Participate in the academic reporting process with support from cohort teachers and academic leadership.
What we're looking for:
- Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Required: 1-2 years of classroom teaching experience.
- Required: Experience working with children with diverse learning styles.
- Preferred: Orton-Gillingham training or certification.
- Preferred: 2-5 years of teaching experience in a special education setting.
- Preferred: Current Virginia Teaching License with endorsement in Special Education or Learning Disabilities.
