The Accounting Manager oversees the financial operations of Boston Marine Services. This position plays a key role in maintaining financial health, managing day-to-day accounting tasks, and supporting business decisions with accurate financial reporting.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement and maintain internal controls and accounting best practices.
- Oversee all general accounting operations, including A/R, A/P, inventory, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
- Manages the general ledger, ensure accurate financial recordkeeping and timely month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and internal managerial reports as needed.
- Manage cash flow and forecast future financial trends.
- Monitor budgets and track expenses to ensure cost-effective operations.
- Work closely with the service department to track job costs, labor, parts inventory, and billing. Monitor and reconcile inventory. Collaborate with service staff to ensure accurate job costing (materials, labor, overhead). Help track margin on different service types and suggest efficiency improvements.
- File state sales tax and ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal financial regulations.
- Works closely with the Controller to manage audits and liaise with external auditors or tax professionals.
- Provide financial insights to support business strategy and operational improvements.
- Works closely with the Controller in budget preparation and financial planning processes.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends and cost-saving opportunities.
- Assist with pricing strategies for services and parts.
- Work with the service manager to align accounting with scheduling and billing.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a small to mid-sized business
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks)
- Strong understanding of job costing and inventory management
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
- High attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, hands-on environment
- Experience in a service-based or repair industry preferred, marine industry a plus
- Knowledge of marine parts and services billing
- Familiarity with scheduling and service order management systems
