JOB PURPOSE
Assist with the development, expansion and maintenance of the regional safety and security program services; including technical assistance, coordination, training and facilitation of school safety programming (i.e. policy and procedures, comprehensive school safety plan reviews, safety best practices, cross-systems collaboration).
RESPONSIBILITIES
Present/train, consult and disseminate information to local schools/districts to develop and maintain school safety systems and facility safe environment practices.
Assist with coordinating, presenting, resource sharing and facilitating across school district and multi-agency-cross-systems as part of the OESD Regional School Safety Center networking meetings and trainings.
Assist schools in assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating comprehensive safe school plans; including implementation and training on model policies and procedures for school safety and security.
Respond to inquiries and serve as a resource to school districts, staff, parents, and community parents to resolve problems, provide information, technical assistance and/or refer to appropriate personnel.
Prepare reports on school safety activities to present to the OESD School Safety and Security Cooperative Advisory Board and others, as required.
Review the School Safety and Security Program annually to analyze effective utilization of existing resources and recommend changes to ensure effective outcomes.
Collaborate with school safety personnel, other school leaders, and local agencies (law enforcement, fire, emergency management, behavioral health agencies, juvenile justice etc.) to ensure cross-systems communications and collaboration and to improve school safety efforts.
Work/collaborate with OESD Regional Safety Center team to coordinate efforts and effectively implement comprehensive school safety services (threat assessment, behavioral health services and school safety and security). This includes:
- Attending behavioral health community meetings and training school staff (i.e. suicide prevention and post-vention, behavioral health signs and symptoms)
- Conducting a threat assessment response, participating in threat assessment team meetings and training threat assessment teams and/or school staff on warning/risk and threat assessment process.
- Serve as a member of the OESD Regional Crisis Counseling Support Team; assist in responding and providing guidance on best practices in response to, and to recover from the suicide or attempted suicide of a student.
Facilitate partnerships and coordination between schools and regional and local systems of school safety and security and supports.
Prepare a variety of materials to document activities, provide references, and convey information.
Maintain a variety of manual and electronic documents, materials, files and records (e.g. calendars/schedules, attendance data, weekly programs and objectives, etc.) to provide up-to-date information and/or written documentation of activities and convey information.
May supervise the work of other staff (e.g. coaching, consultation on technical issues, adaptive challenges, personnel matters, job responsibilities/orientation and evaluation) to ensure program objectives are met within the department.
Monitor assigned program activities to coordinate activities and ensure compliance with established financial, legal and/or administrative requirements.
Participate in a learning community of peers with OSPI leadership to work together on shared initiatives and gather information from lessons learned.
Serve as a liaison between OESD 114 and county, state and federal safety agencies.
Attend all required program staff meetings and community meetings, and training per supervisor’s direction.
Maintain knowledge of best practice and current initiatives in the field by reading relevant publications, periodicals and books. Attend conferences/workshops. Inform and disseminate knowledge gained to local school districts/schools and community partners.
Assist in grant writing, gathering research data, schools/district data, collecting letters of support, proof reading and writing for proposals and grant applications
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in related field (i.e. education, law and justice or emergency services administration) preferred; five years’ experience in school safety, emergency management, fire or law enforcement in lieu of degree required.
Three years of experience in school safety, emergency management, fire or law enforcement preferred.
One year of experience working in a school setting preferred.
Successful experience working with and collaborating with community agencies.
WA State Driver’s License.
