What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medicolegal Investigator - Identification position at Off of Chief Medical Examiner?
Work schedule will be Monday-Friday, 7am-3pm. Following probationary period one remote/telework day will be allowed each week. Specific telework day to be approved by the department manager. Selected candidate will be expected at times to be available for weekend coverage as needed. Adequate notice of schedule change will be provided. Primary work location will be Boston, however potential workspace may be available in Westfield or Sandwich depending on selected candidate’s primary residence location. All training and orientation will be completed in the Boston office.
1. Assists the Identification Director in managing all identifications at the OCME in accordance with the Decedent Identification Policy.
2. Collects documentation from family members to aid in identification of human remains.
3. Meet with family members to attain a visual identification.
4. Work with Medical Examiners, Forensic Odontologist and Forensic Anthropologist to facilitate identification of human remains.
5. Uses online software systems to locate decedent’s next of kin.
6. Work closely with Administrative Staff and Medicolegal Investigators if there is an identification issue.
7. When necessary, recommend changes to Decedent Identification Policy to Director.
8. Assist the Identification Director and OCME Executive Staff in managing the OCME’s mass fatality preparation to include communication and coordination with local councils and attendance at regional drills.
9. Assists the Identification Director in developing and implementing mass fatality trainings and drills for OCME employees.
10. Coordinates colleting samples for DNA identification and sending to outside laboratories, as necessary.
11. Serves as liaison with external agencies for mass fatality planning such as the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Department of Public Health’s Office of Emergency Management, MassPort, the Department of Mental Health local hospital emergency managers and local cities and towns emergency managers.
12. Serves as liaison with external agencies for identifications such as state and local police departments, hospitals, and dental offices.
13. Other duties as assigned.
Experience working with human remains in a variety of postmortem conditions, reviewing medical and dental records, and/or interacting and interviewing is desired. Background or education in a medical field, forensic science, forensic anthropology, or medicolegal death investigation preferred.
