Hours Worked: 8:00am to 5:00pm; Work days and hours may vary; on call 24 hours
Perform supervisory tasks in designated district(s); Provide technical assistance to investigative personnel (e.g., provide clarification of rules & regulations governing motor carrier inspections, proper inspection procedures, out-of-service criteria & possible safety violations, etc.); Schedule work assignments; Compile reports, (e.g., out-of-service verification project, overtime, public appearance, terminal inspection, crash inspections, complaint investigation & grievance investigations, etc.); Travel within assigned district(s) to provide onsite direction & assistance to inspectors; Ensure compliance of rules & regulations (e.g., division, department, agency, state & federal) as applicable to enforcement objective to govern commercial motor carrier operations.
Under direction of Highway Patrol Licensing & Commercial Standards {LCS} Unit Commander, Lieutenant, independently conducts inspections of commercial motor carrier vehicles (e.g., travels in state-issued vehicle within designated area or to specific location {e.g. weigh station, rest area, & road side} to conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles), climbs into trucks & trailers to check for proper cargo securement & presence of hazardous materials, bends, stoops & utilizes mechanics' "creeper" in order to crawl under vehicle to visually check vehicle mechanical components {e.g., brakes, shoes, linings, drums, hoses, air reserve tanks & measurements, vehicle suspension, springs, steering: [e.g., drag links, tie rods; frame cracks]}; inspects company markings & safety equipment: {e.g., lights, fire extinguisher, reflective triangles}, vehicle equipment, load securement, driver's operator's license, medical certificate & log book & hours of service records. Documents & reports economic violations with PUCO, investigates assigned complaints regarding violation of PUCO rules & regulations, utilizes portable laptop & other computer equipment to research motor carrier operating authority, registration, insurance & record inspection data, electronically transfers inspection data. Makes onsite recommendations to correct violations, provides assistance where possible, maintains effective public relations with drivers, company representatives, law enforcement officers & others to ensure compliance (e.g., checks compliance with hazardous material regulations, refers to PUCO & federal rules & regulations, policies & procedures, federal hazardous material regulations, out-of-service criteria & other reference sources) with state & federal safety regulations (e.g., Ohio Administrative Code Ch. 4901-PUCO, the Ohio Revised Code 5503.31, Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Parts 100-180, 383, 387, 390-397). Other duties as assigned.
Ability to calculate fractions, decimals & percentages; 24 mos. exp. in supervisory principles & techniques; valid driver's license; additional training & education commensurate with program area to be assigned per approved position description on file.
VALID DRIVER LICENSE REQUIRED

- Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
