Who We Are Looking For
A civil engineering or GIS student with some level of experience in using GIS and GPS tools (such as ArcGIS including ESRI tools, Field Maps and/or Collector).
What You Will Be Doing
The primary role is to work in a GIS platform to georeference historic geotechnical data and make available on our Transportation Information Mapping System (TIMS). A secondary role is assistance with geotechnical field explorations, geohazard inventory, and laboratory testing.
Possibility of pursuing some level of project design.
Official Position Description
In the Office of Geotechnical Engineering, uses a computer & related software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel & Access; Global Positioning System (GPS), glNT) to collect, store, retrieve, review, & provide interpretation of data; assists in populating & overseeing data entry into geohazard (e.g., rockfall, landslide, abandoned underground mine) & geotechnical databases (e.g., Transportation Information Mapping System (TIMS) , Falcon). Performs research & enters data into ODOT's historical subsurface investigation records. Performs engineering data processing, collation, & analysis as directed. Participates in development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS )- & GPS- based tools (e.g., ArcGIS including, ESRI tools, field maps &/or collector) for data storage & management & interfaces with internal & external users.
Performs miscellaneous laboratory & field duties as directed by section head. Assists with field explorations (e.g., GPS & geohazard field data collection, cone penetration testing (CPT), in-situ testing). Cleans & maintains equipment; conducts equipment calibrations. Conducts site reconnaissance; uses camera to photograph testing sites & areas of site access.
This is a temporary position involving various duties that permit exposure to the student's field of study &/or provide experience that is a useful addition to the student's education & meaningful preparation for future professional employment.
This Position is Unclassified per Section 124.11(A)(29)
The rate of pay is based upon the student's academic status
Freshman and Sophomore students - $19.50 per hour
Junior and Senior Students - $20.00 per hour
Graduate Students - $24.00 per hour
Must be enrolled in college, university, or graduate school, and in good academic standing.
