What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Supervisor, RVT position at Ohio Wildlife Center?
Summary
The Staff Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Operational Director in overseeing the day-to-day tasks of the Wildlife Hospital and Pre-release facility. The supervisor will implement policies and procedures and guide staff and volunteers in their daily jobs and responsibilities. As a registered veterinary technician, the supervisor will assist the director in keeping track of pertinent medications and licenses associated with those medications.
Major Functions and Responsibilities
Animal Welfare:
- Ensure that all animals receive the highest standard of care
- Implement policies set forth by the Operational Director, assisting in mentoring staff and volunteers
- Patient care protocols for treating and continually monitoring patients (includes the use of diagnostic equipment, oral medications, and gavage tubing)
- Assist in the medical management of patients, offering RVT support
- Take an active role in the care and husbandry of wildlife patients including, but not limited to:
- Admission and triage of new wildlife patients
- Administration of appropriate treatments and therapies, including humane euthanasia when necessary
- Cleaning and maintenance of wildlife areas and enclosures
- Cleaning and maintenance of clinic stations including kitchen, reception, etc.
- Provide daily care of patients including preparation and distribution of appropriate diets and fresh water for patients
- Regular health checks for patients (body condition, behavior, weight, etc.)
- Contributes staff presence including daily monitoring of animals and appropriate coverage
Operational
- Ensures clinic cleanliness & safety; minimizes risk to staff, volunteers, and animals
- Accurately tracks permit-required patient admission, treatment, and transfer data
- Answers reception and office phones, manages customer traffic and offers general administrative support
- Provides counsel and first point of contact to individuals bringing animals to OWC’s hospital (solicits, secures and tracks customer donations)
- Understands and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Performs additional duties as assigned
- Assist in overseeing prison and homecare programs
- Coordinates kitchen and food preparation and storage procedures; communicates to volunteers
- Staff scheduling
- Promotes OWC’s mission regarding wildlife health studies
Leadership
- Training and continuing education of new hospital volunteers and interns
- Mentor and manage the team, fostering a positive work environment
- Assign tasks to staff, interns, and volunteers as needed to ensure the day-to-day operations run smoothly
- Upholds policies and procedures of OWC animal care and humane treatment
- Regularly recognizes and thanks volunteers to encourage continued involvement
- Maintains constant focus on safe workplace practices
- Prepares routine reports to the operational director
- Assists other team members carry out organizational tasks when necessary

- Works evenings, holidays, and weekends as required, willingness for occasional travel is necessary
- Attends required team and organizational meetings, and represents OWC at public events

Required Abilities and Skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; including public speaking
- Competency in basic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software
- Experience in conflict resolution and strong creative problem-solving skills
- Understanding of and commitment to the role and mission of Ohio Wildlife Center
- Physically fit; able to lift 50 pounds and no aversion to inclement weather
- Obtain rabies vaccinations (upon employment) and maintain titers
- Clean background check, valid Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license, and good driving record
- Willing to learn and follow the laws of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ohio Division of Wildlife, and animal regulations of local municipalities
- Maintain a professional appearance (includes wearing an appropriate, well-kept uniform)

- Maintain a positive attitude and public image at all times
- Extensive knowledge of animal care to provide the best care for the animals. This includes knowing how to handle and feed different types of wildlife, how to provide them with medical care, and how to keep them safe and comfortable in their rehabilitation space.
- Strong communication skills with other professionals, such as veterinarians, to ensure the health of the animals they treat. They also communicate with the public to educate them about wildlife rehabilitation and to encourage them to report injured animals.
- Ability to solve problems by researching solutions and implementing them.
- Attention to detail and organizational skills, as they often have many responsibilities and tasks to complete.
- Adaptability as may be exposed to weather conditions that may change throughout the day as well as work with a variety of animals, some of which may be more challenging to care for than others.
Necessary Knowledge and Experience
Registered Ohio veterinary technician desired
3-5 years of supervisory experience
Minimum three years experience in wildlife rehabilitation or emergency-level animal care
Proven history of successful volunteer management
Extensive knowledge of the general biology of native Ohio wildlife
Working knowledge and understanding of medical treatment of animals, wildlife experience preferred
