Ideal Candidate Statement
The ideal candidate for this position will be someone who :
- Possesses lab skills required to set up, troubleshoot and maintain college-level labs and demos in engineering and physics.
- Is a team player.
- Is able to consult user manuals and implement the technical instructions therein to ensure all lab setups and demos are functional ahead of the lab sessions.
- Has working knowledge of basic physics and engineering principles, and possesses skills and experience in machining, electronics, and instrumentation repair.
- Is familiar with the equipment used in engineering and physics labs (for example : analog and digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes, material testing, 3D printers, drones, power supplies, and mechanical sensors).
- Has experience in creating the interface between computers and data acquisition sensors, and using with software for data acquisition and processing.
- Is able to construct simple fixtures and rigs for lab and demo setups.
- Conducts periodic checks to ascertain the proper working condition of all equipment and, if applicable, troubleshoot and / or initiate and manage service requests to repair failing equipment.
- Ensures that all lab and demonstration equipment is stored in a safe and organized manner, fully inventoried and documented, accessible to all users at any time of the workweek.
- Possesses excellent documentation skills, manages technical instruction sheets, lab write-ups, purchase orders, vendor information, repair, and surplus orders and services.
- Pays strong attention to and follows safety regulations.
- Possesses good writing and communication skills; helps faculty in creating and improving lab instructions and is able to explain a demonstration or lab setup to a faculty member or visitor, when needed.
- Keeps abreast of new laboratory exercises and technologies in engineering and physics, and discusses innovations with faculty.
- Has experience in a physics / engineering lab in an educational or industry setting highly desirable and preferred.
Position Description
Under general supervision, the position supports science courses by setting up labs, setting up equipment, preparing specimens, and other lab materials. The position is responsible for maintaining all lab equipment, materials, supply levels, and for ensuring lab materials are functional. The position is responsible for storing and disposing of hazardous waste materials.

Physical Characteristics
This position requires physical abilities needed to work in a standard office setting, including but not limited to : standing and / or sitting for prolonged periods; occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and twisting; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling light and moderate amounts of weight; operating office equipment which may require repeated fine motor skills (e.g. : keyboard use); and the ability to communicate inwritten and verbal forms. The position requires vision and hearing in normal ranges (with or without correction) sufficient to operate any assigned equipment and the ability to clearly communicate with others in written and verbal forms.
In addition to the above, this position will necessitate working in a lab environment with and / or around chemicals and other fume-generating hazardous substances and objects. The work will require the safe handling of lab equipment and supplies, including objects of substantial weight and size.
