This critical role supports the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CIVEN) in advancing key initiatives to solidify its position as a state-of the-art research and teaching facility, fostering innovation and thought leadership. This Lab Coordinator position is a strategic partner in the growing research enterprise of CIVEN, enabling efficient / proper operation of research infrastructure within CIVEN located at the Bert Cooper Engineering Laboratory (BCEL), the Advanced Technology Research Center (ATRC), and elsewhere on campus.
Responsibilities :
Works with the BCEL Director, other departmental faculty, students and staff to identify, define, document, and gain consensus on CIVEN research infrastructure (equipment and space) use and planning priorities, ensuring cohesion. Consensus priorities are reported to, and then directed by, the CIVEN Department Head.
Coordinates the use of shared research infrastructure in CIVEN between multiple concurrent projects in adherence to consensus priorities...
Collaborates with BCEL Director and other departmental faculty on budgeting and forecasting of lab equipment maintenance and purchase / replacement costs, including market research, quotes and pricing, and comparative analysis of alternative options.
Collaborates and performs laboratory teaching and research tasks in support of departmental faculty and student researchers (see required and preferred qualifications).
Instructs students and faculty in proper operation of laboratory equipment, both in maintenance and safety.
Develops standard operating procedures (SOPs) and documents SOP and equipment safety training.
Ensures BCEL laboratories are stocked with general use consumable materials and that BCEL is a clean and safe environment to work in.
Performs routine and preventative maintenance on research instrumentation and equipment.
Coordinates with faculty to procure and schedule needed equipment repairs, maintenance and training, as necessary, from vendors.
Serves as an operational mentor and resource to work-study personnel and research and teaching assistants.
Conducts equipment and building inventories and prepares property reports.
Ensures CIVEN vehicles (trucks and forklifts) are maintained, their proper use documented, and their availability coordinated between competing needs.
This position requires work in a laboratory environment, and work may be conducted outside of normal business hours, and, occasionally on weekends. PPE is required in certain areas of the facility and when using specific equipment or performing specific responsibilities.
This position will interact with laboratory equipment that has fast moving parts, power tools, and chemicals. Although the laboratory is primarily climate controlled, some responsibilities may involve working in or around extreme temperatures.
This position requires frequent movement. Lifting objects up to 50lbs may occur frequently, and in excess of 50lbs occasionally. This position may require frequent periods of standing or walking with rest breaks, as in accordance with policy.
