The Veteran Outreach and Success Coordinator is dedicated to students with military backgrounds (active duty, veteran, reservists, guard) personal and educational development and is committed to providing guidance and support as students transition into post-military endeavors and navigate their time at Old Dominion University. The Veteran Outreach and Success Coordinator will work with students with military backgrounds in the following areas to support personal and academic success while at ODU: goal setting and decision-making, transition from military to student, technology literacy, academic planning, time management, financial literacy, health and wellness, major and career exploration, community service/service learning, and social awareness. The Veteran Outreach and Success Coordinator delivers monthly programming and engages in one-on-one, bi-weekly or monthly meetings to discuss various relevant topics and to refine students' college life skills. This position is housed in the Military Connection Center and will work with Military Connection Center staff and Center for Orientation, Retention, and Exploration staff.
Job Responsibilities:Build and cultivate relationships through programming:
Build relationships with students by delivering personalized, constructive, engaging, and informative programming under Operation BLUE, surrounding the needs of the military-affiliated population; Run a minimum of four programs per Fall and Spring semester. Operation BLUE: Bridging Life and University Experience is an active learning program comprised of a minimum in the following areas: Introduction to campus offices (e.g., Educational Accessibility, Counseling, Health Promotions, etc.); Academic planning: instructor relationships and learning styles; Personal finances: paying for college (financial aid, GI Bill, Tuition Assistance, etc.), budgeting, and banking; Career goals and the road to successful employment (including resume workshops); Keys to success and healthy living; Getting involved on campus and building community.Outreach to students:
Support prospective military background students with navigating the ODU admissions process and provide sustained support to accepted students to promote university retention goals; Coordinate outreach to students with military backgrounds (e.g., active duty, veteran, reservists, guard).Develop and implement individual action plans:
Refer and connect students with relevant University or military/veteran resources and services.; Assist students in developing personal, academic, career, and social goals that will contribute to academic and personal success.; Assist students in developing and implementing individual action plans toward achieving identified goals; Aid students in identifying and overcoming barriers to success. Suggest strategies for measuring student progress toward excellence within a realistic timeframe.Monitor and record student progress:
Ensure accuracy and confidentiality of related records and data Monitor and record student progress. Maintain appropriate documentation to include data related to student goals, student performance, and strategies implemented by coach to assist in student success.Build and cultivate relationships through programming:

Support the Military Connection Center staff in daily operations and general customer service pertaining to military background students and VA education program related issues. Supports MCC programming and initiatives. Actively participates as an effective member of Military Connection Center team by completing assigned duties.

Education and/or training:
Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work, or other relevant field with 1-year professional experience in post-secondary, high school setting, community outreach environment, or leadership in the armed forces.
Experience in academic counseling, advising, or related field. Experience in a higher education setting, working with student-focused initiatives.

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of student development and resources to promote student success.
- Ability to identify relevant community resources and external support services and connect students as appropriate.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the needs of military background and veteran students.
- Ability to effectively present information one-on-one and in small groups in-person/virtually, as well as ability to write reports, business correspondence and communication tools.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including attention to detail and accuracy
- Demonstrated experience communicating and collaborating with students, institutional personnel, and the public
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs, Canva or other marketing programs, Zoom or virtual meeting platforms
