The intake nurse is responsible for assisting with the medical admission process of patients

presenting for treatment of drug and alcohol use. They work with patients who are new to the

facility and experiencing symptoms related to substance abuse, including acute intoxication,

withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and other medical and / or mental health issues.

The role of an intake nurse is to triage incoming patients regarding their use of illicit substances.

Additionally, the intake nurse communicates with medical providers regarding medication orders

and level of care assignment for each patient.

This is an hourly full-time position working either dayshift or afternoon shift. Every other

weekend and rotating holidays are required.

Because patients in detoxification programs can be a danger to themselves and others, intake

nurses must be able to handle crisis situations and be prepared to provide lifesaving and / or

emotional support to patients.

In addition, each nurse must be able to work well under pressure and maintain a high level of

professional competence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Performing physical assessments to determine the patient's current health status and

predict outcomes of treatment.

  • Interviewing patients to gather information about their lifestyles, habits, and medical
  • histories.

  • Measuring vital signs and other factors that may affect a patient's health status.
  • Reconciling home medications brought into the facility by the patient, which may include
  • counting of pills.

  • Communicating with the medical provider to obtain admission orders, level of care
  • placement, and continuation of prescribed home medications.

  • Performing a thorough skin assessment of each patient.
  • Observing / monitoring patient's urine collection and shower.
  • Searching patient's personal belongings including but not limited to clothes, socks, shoes,
  • hair pieces, head coverings, prosthetics, etc.

  • Providing support and education to patients who are dealing with addiction issues,
  • including helping them identify ways they can overcome their addictions and stay sober.

  • Coordinating with providers and members of the healthcare team to develop treatment
  • plans that meet each patient's individual needs.

  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and how it applies in the healthcare setting.
  • Ensuring the timely flow of pertinent patient information within the organization.
  • Participating in staff meetings.
  • Maintaining appropriate and accurate patient health records.
  • Making moral, ethical, and legal medical decisions which are in the best interest of the
  • patient.

  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Valid and unrestricted nursing license in the state of Ohio.
  • CPR / First Aid Certified with training in the application of Narcan.
  • Knowledge of signs of acute intoxication, the detoxification process and withdrawal
  • management and residential treatment protocol.

  • Ability to assess patient needs and provide care accordingly.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Empathetic, non-judgmental, and compassionate bedside manner.
