Psychiatric Medical Assistant

This position directly supports day to day operations of our Psychiatrists. Psychiatric Medical Assistant works closely with all team players of the Behavioral Health Department, AOD and One Community Health Pharmacy.


This role is on-site (100%) in Sacramento, CA (95811).


Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 6:30pm

Essential Functions

  • Prepare and/or positions the patient for examination by the provider. Explains the basics of what to expect during the visit and respond to questions, eases fears and reassures and relaxes patient.
  • Obtain information required by physician and/or nurse practitioner to assist in diagnosis and treatment. Takes height, weight, blood pressure and vital signs and documents the information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Obtain information regarding previous labs, x-rays, tests, and pertinent visit information. Obtains specimens, conducts EKG's, urinalysis and other tasks related to this position and records information and outcomes in the EMR as directed by physician and/or nurse practitioner.
  • Reviews and updates allergy and reaction information.
  • Updates medication lists at the time of patient appointment.
  • Assist provider with exam and/or procedures.
  • Set up equipment and has correct instruments ready for procedures.
  • Maintains sterile technique if required for procedure. As necessary remains during procedure and receives instruction from physician and/or nurse practitioner.
  • Assures all specimens and requisitions are labeled and processed.
  • Administer injections and medications as indicated in a written ordered documented in by the provider/nurse practitioner.
  • Observe patient for reaction following tests, medication or procedures. Responsible for notifying provider immediately of baseline changes in patient's status or follows emergency procedures.
  • Is responsible for adhering to the Medical Assistant Procedures.
  • Participates in the continuous quality improvement process as required.
  • Respond to patient emergencies ensures that appropriate personnel are contacted. Ensure that patient is transported as situation indicates.
  • This position is responsible for continuous training in equipment sterilization, operation of medical equipment and sterilization of exam rooms and other designated areas.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Active CPR, BLS Certification.
  • Certificate of Completion of a Medical Assistant Program from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited college or technical school required

Preferred Background

  • 3 months Medical Assistant experience in psychiatric services office environment
