The Gas Station Cashier will scan the customer’s selections, ensure that prices and quantities are accurate, accept payments, issue receipts, answer inquiries, and provide helpful information about customer products, promotions, or item locations. You will also respond to complaints, process refunds or exchanges of items, and maintain a clean workspace.

To succeed as a Gas Station Cashier, you should have a strong work ethic and high level of accuracy. You should be responsible, attentive to customer needs, and committed to providing excellent service.

Essential Functions

  • Welcome customers, answer their questions, help them locate items, and providing advice or recommendations.
  • Operate scanners, scales, cash registers, and other electronics.
  • Balance the cash register and generate reports for credit and debit sales.
  • Accept payments, ensure all prices and quantities are accurate, and proving a receipt to every customer.
  • Process refunds and exchanges, resolving complaints.
  • Bag and/or wrap purchases to ensure safe transport.
  • Follow all store procedures regarding coupons, gift cards, or purchases of specific items, such as alcohol or cigarettes.
  • Responsible for maintaining the store inventory, stocking and re-stocking shelves, and replenishing products in shelving, coolers and hot food areas. May be required to prepare the hot food, as well. May perform maintenance on drink machines and be responsible for maintaining and refilling the outside washing dispensers.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly station. This includes servicing and cleaning the public restrooms, cleaning the windows and countertops, vacuuming, sweeping and mopping the floors, and organizing shelves.

Work Environment
Gas station cashiers typically spend the majority of their time on their feet. Their work can be repetitive, as they primarily stand behind counters or checkout stands. They also ensure that their stations are clean and organized.

Physical Demands
In the course of this job, employees are regularly required to communicate and listen. They frequently need to stand, walk, use their hands for grasping or handling items, and reach with their arms. Occasionally, they may need to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Employees must often lift or move items weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally handle up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements for this position include the ability to see clearly at close and far distances, distinguish colors, have peripheral vision, perceive depth, and adjust focus.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Customer Service or Cashier experience.
  • Ability to handle transactions accurately and responsibly.
  • High level of energy with strong customer service skills.
  • Basic math and computer skills.
  • Ability to stand, walk, lift heavy items, and work with other team members in a fast-paced environment to provide excellent service.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Helpful, courteous approach to resolving complaints.

Preferred Education and Experience

2 years of gas station cashier experience.
