Description
The Medical Office Clerk in the Practice Setting is responsible for managing appointments, coordinating billable services, and ensuring exceptional patient experiences within medical practice procedures. This role involves greeting visitors, managing patient records, scheduling appointments, and handling financial transactions with patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Greet visitors, direct them to appropriate areas, and screen solicitors courteously.
- Provide written care plans to patients as part of their medical records.
- Maintain medical records by filing and scanning related reports and labs, flagging abnormal results for physician attention.
- Identify patients with ED or hospital admission, obtain discharge summaries, and assist with follow-up care.
- Explain financial requirements to patients, collect copayments, and schedule appointments.
- Use computerized systems to schedule appointments based on patient preferences and physician availability.
- Maintain scheduling system accuracy, provide daily schedules to physicians and staff, and communicate updates.
- Coordinate with clinical staff to gather charge information for patients and complete charge verification in the database.
- Verify insurance eligibility and collect copayments, logging payments into the database.
- Process cash transactions, balance cash drawers, and complete daily bank deposits.
- Perform other non-clinical duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
- Minimum of one year of experience preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with medical practice protocols, billing practices, and clinic policies.
- Understanding of manual/computerized scheduling systems, customer service principles, coding, clinic operating policies, and billing practices.
- Effective communication skills for coordinating with physicians, clinicians, and patients.
- Proficiency in maintaining appointment schedules manually or using computerized systems.
- Proficient computer skills, including the use of standard office software and calculators.
- Ability to multitask effectively, handling various responsibilities while maintaining a pleasant demeanor. Clear communication skills for effectively dealing with patients in all circumstances.
- Analytical ability to assess situations and respond appropriately.
- Understanding and interpretation of policies and regulations, along with effective teamwork abilities.
