Job Title:
Phlebotomist
Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood and collecting other specimens from inpatients and outpatients of all ages for diagnostic and treatment purposes. The role involves patient registration, insurance verification, and adherence to established procedures for specimen collection and processing. The Phlebotomist must maintain a high degree of attention to detail, manage patient adverse reactions to phlebotomy, and perform routine tasks independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Greet patients courteously, explain procedures, and maintain patient dignity. Properly identify patients using two identifiers and verify patient identity against requisition or order. Follow specific test requirements and wear appropriate PPE.
- Collect correct specimens and volumes for each test requested. Select appropriate site for venipuncture or heel stick, adhere to safety precautions, and use sterile technique. Follow requirements for patients with IVs, fistulas, or mastectomy.
- Correctly label specimens in the presence of the patient, confirm identity, and handle specimens according to processing requirements. Perform specimen processing, including centrifugation, separation, freezing, and adherence to test-specific requirements.
- Register patients (draw stations) or drop-off specimens (main laboratory), verify insurance, update patient accounts, and scan required documentation to patient records. Run software programs to check for medical necessity and administer ABNs for non-covered testing.
- Accurately create electronic test orders based on provider requests, verify completeness of lab requisitions, and follow up with providers for missing or unclear information.
- Verify supplies and equipment are up-to-date, document required temperatures, and maintain a clean and well-stocked work area.
- Answer phones, document verbal orders, obtain written documentation, and fax test results to providers upon request.
- Manage any patient adverse reactions to the phlebotomy process.
- Maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance.
Physical Requirements:
The role involves standing, walking, bending, and handling equipment for specimen collection. Attention to detail and manual dexterity are essential.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Successful completion of a formal program in phlebotomy is preferred.
Experience:
- Previous experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital or draw station is preferred.
Licensure:
- Licensure is not required by NYS. Certification as a phlebotomist is preferred but not required.
