Medical Records Technician
The Onondaga County Health Department is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Medical Records Technician to manage and maintain accurate patient records according to health regulations and departmental standards. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of medical recordkeeping, and privacy regulations, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment to support the delivery of quality healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage, organize, and maintain patient medical records, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Input, update, and retrieve medical information from electronic health record (EHR) systems and paper files.
- Ensure medical records are properly coded and classified for billing, reporting, and legal purposes.
- Process requests for medical records from patients, healthcare providers, and authorized entities while adhering to privacy and confidentiality guidelines.
- Review patient files to ensure that all necessary documents and forms are included and up-to-date.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of reports related to patient care and services as required by the health department.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of electronic health record systems, including troubleshooting and data entry.
- Assist with audits and compliance reviews to ensure proper documentation practices and compliance with health information regulations.
- Maintain knowledge of current medical recordkeeping procedures, including HIPAA guidelines, and ensure the department remains in compliance with these standards.
- Provide training and assistance to other department staff on proper documentation practices and use of medical record systems.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Records Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or equivalent is required.
- Experience working with electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical record management.
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations, medical terminology, and coding procedures.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with staff, patients, and external organizations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
