OCWA – Central New York’s Water Authority is currently seeking candidates for an Engineering Technician I to join the Engineering Department
This position is responsible for performing technical duties of moderate difficulty in field and office civil engineering work. Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class performs technical work in the areas of engineering studies and investigations, field surveys, evaluation, testing and quality control of construction, materials and equipment and office technical work. Assignments are given orally or in writing and usually general in nature to allow for technical independent judgment in implementing the work assignment. Assists with the following duties:
- Assists in the conducting of engineering studies and investigations, field surveys, construction, inspections, demolition inspections and maintenance of contracts which may include walking over rough terrain, uneven surfaces, or hills.
- Unloads and transports equipment from vehicles to field assignment locations.
- Evaluates, tests and performs quality control work on construction materials manufactured equipment used in construction.
- Performs work involving office reduction and plotting of field survey data; checks engineering and cost calculations.
- Assists in the preparation of plans and specifications; design of engineering projects; preparation of contracts and their administration.
- Assists in the review of specifications and engineering drawings.
- Assists in the maintenance of office records and the preparation of contractors' payment requisitions.
Specific to OCWA's Lead and Copper Compliance Program this position will assist with:
- Coordination and oversight of water service line inspection and replacement work
- Coordination, observation, and documentation of OCWA side water service line replacement with OCWA forces or a Contractor
- Coordination and follow-up of notifications after existing service line disturbances
- Observation and documentation of customer side service line work
- Field verification and inspection of service line materials and updating and maintaining the inventory database
- Communication and coordination with several departments within OCWA.

Position is Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associate degree in Engineering Science or in an engineering technology field; or,
B. Two (2) years of paraprofessional or professional work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in civil engineering.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid NYS driver's license appropriate to the vehicle(s) being operated.
The Onondaga County Water Authority is a civil service agency under the jurisdiction of the Onondaga County Department of Personnel. Hiring is in accordance with Onondaga County and New York State civil service regulations. Many of the positions at OCWA are “competitive,” which means that the applicant must have successfully completed a competitive examination given by the Onondaga County Department of Personnel and appear on an eligibility list derived from the examination. Notices of upcoming exams and eligibility requirements can be found on Onondaga County’s web site or by contacting the Personnel Office directly. Other positions at OCWA are “non-competitive,” which means that no examination is necessary. However, specific training and/or experience qualifications are required to be employed in these positions.
