NATURE OF WORK:
An employee in this class assists the Transportation Coordinator in the management of the daily operations of the school transportation program. Work is planned and directed through the interpretation and application of guidelines. The employee is expected to help resolve most problems and to confer with the Transportation Coordinator on problems of policy. Work is performed under general supervision. Administrative supervision is exercised over a number of school transportation employees.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to communicate effectively with school staff and parents
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with school staff, bus drivers and county office staff
- Ability to gather and analyze data
- Ability to compile and summarize information
- Ability to organize and prioritize task effectively
- Ability to learn, interpret and explain policies and regulations
- Knowledge of general office practices and machines including computers with MS Office, calculator, fax machine, and copiers
- Ability to exercise good judgment
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- High School graduate
- Current valid NC Commercial Driver’s License with P and S endorsements
- Bus Driver experience
- Two years related clerical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience, preferred
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months
SALARY: Salary Grade 61
FLSA Status: Exempt
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Gather and update bus run information for TIMS office, and maintain current transportation information for transportation office, bus drivers and schools.
- File records and performs data entry as requested.
- Fill out required reports (Principals Bus Report TD-2, Regular Pupil/Regular Bus Report TD-2R) as required.
- Inspect assigned buses for cleanliness, condition of seats, vandalism, body damage, and inventory of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, blood-borne pathogens kits.
- Supervise 20-40 bus drivers within assigned school district, create congenial work atmosphere for drivers, assist drivers with any needs or problems that occur.
- Help maintain payroll for bus drivers, keep daily time sheets, turn in monthly time sheets to Bus Garage, report all changes in driver status to Bus Garage.
- Coordinate extra programs: (Pre-K, Vocations) report extra mileage and cost to Transportation Office.
- Notify mechanic of any mechanical problems recorded on daily sign-in sheets.
- Investigate bus accidents involving assigned school buses and fill out accident reports.
- Report road hazards, problems with bus stops, bus turnarounds, etc. to Supervisor(s).
- Schedule personnel and activity trips with schools in assigned area.
- Fill in on bus route(s) when a sub driver is not available.
- Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Supervisor(s)
