REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Intake and Foster Manager and Lead Intake Coordinator
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Intake Coordinator is responsible for the intake of pets through the public. This includes owner surrenders, return adoptions, intake from local municipal shelters, other rescue groups, and stray animals. This position requires excellent customer service skills and documented experience working with the public in a variety of situations This position is in a fast-paced work environment and requires critical thinking and multitasking in a team environment. This position collaborates with other Intake staff members, Medical, Kennel, Behavior and Client Service Department Managers.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Animal Intake Program
· In collaboration with Intake and Foster Manager, Lead Intake Coordinator, and other Intake Coordinators, determines daily intake numbers based on shelter capacity, animal variety and behavior and surgery schedule.
· Maintains strong relationships with transfer partners and can communicate our ability to aid.
· Evaluates animals based on temperament of animal and shelter needs, seeking to find opportunities to accept animals when possible.
· Reserves specific enclosures as needed for daily intakes.
· Walks the kennels daily to determine weekly intake focus of breed, size, color variety, and available space.
· Coordinate with transfer partners for animal drop offs and animal pick-ups.
· Travel to local and out of town shelters to view and transport animals.
· Complete behavior assessment with incoming animals using the assessment tool to ensure each pet is a good fit for the shelter.
· Communicate with the Medical Team for the possible intake of pets with special medical needs or treatment.
· Engages with the public in a polite and effective manner and responds promptly to all intake requests even when shelter is at capacity.
· Assist with the vaccination, blood draws and medical process for new and incoming animals preparing them for adoption.
· Provides welcoming environments for all customers in need of placing their animal with Operation Kindness.
· Provides viable alternatives, when needed other than Operation Kindness to customers.
General Responsibilities
· Reports suspicion of animal abuse or neglect to Director of Animal Care, or CEO immediately.
· Reports any unsafe working conditions to Director of Animal Care or CEO.
· Maintains client, donor, volunteer and staff confidentiality at all times.
· Follows Standard Precautions and other safety regulations at all times.
· Completes all necessary and requested training in a timely manner in accordance with shelter policy.
· Attends staff meetings.
· Participates in shelter events as requested by Manager.
· Performs other duties as requested.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
· Proven prior experience handling dogs and cats of different sizes and temperaments.
· Proven customer service skills.
· Proven excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
· Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
· Proven organizational detail-oriented and time management skills.
· Ability to work weekends.
· Must be eligible to be a driver for Operation Kindness, including a valid driver's license.
· Proven knowledge and experience using Micro Soft Office products, Animal Care software experience a plus, and other communication software such as Slack.
Education Requirements
· High school diploma or GED, plus basic office and computer skills.
Experience Requirements
· Minimum one year of significant experience working as a volunteer or staff member in an animal care environment (animal welfare organization, animal rescue/adoption organization, animal shelter or veterinary clinic).
· Veterinary or shelter experience preferred. Bilingual a plus, but not required.
Physical Requirements
· Requires frequent lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs. and greater with assistance/ visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity.
· Subject to climbing, kneeling, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking to perform the essential functions.
Working Conditions
· Inside and outside with frequent exposure to temperature variations, chemicals, noises, unpleasant odors, confining workspace, and animal feces. Maybe exposed to bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases.
