Position Location & Work Format
This role is flexible in its location. Hastings will entertain candidates who reside within our five-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, or Illinois) to work in a remote capacity. Candidates who reside within the greater Hastings, MI area can work either a full-time onsite or hybrid work arrangement. Regardless of the location, this role will generally work within our standard office hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Hastings may consider candidates who reside in states outside of our five-state territory if other elements of their application are strong.
Position Duties & Responsibilities
- Review, approve, and process acceptable applications concerning underwriting guidelines to achieve corporate premium and profitability objectives.
- Continuously operates within established service standards.
- Stays up-to-date and knowledgeable of all commercial products, pricing, and coverages.
- Interprets and understands authority levels, guidelines, and additional underwriting resource materials to achieve quality metrics.
- Communicates and negotiates effectively and efficiently with external contacts, including agency staff, policyholders, external vendors, and Hastings business units.
- Assists in the training and development of new underwriters and underwriting technicians.
- Utilizes various systems and resources to support overall corporate objectives.
- Actively participates in professional development, i.e., continuing education or self-improvement.
- Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
Candidate Requirements and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Business Administration, or Finance preferred, or equivalent work experience and education.
- Prior commercial underwriting experience within a Property & Casualty insurance carrier is highly preferred.
- A certificate in General Insurance, AINS, and pictorials specific to underwriting assignments are preferred, as are higher-level (CPCU, AU) designations.
- Demonstrated PC skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication ability required.
