Position Title: Substance Use Counselor
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Hybrid - Applicants preferred to reside in one of the following Idaho cities: Idaho Falls, Pocatello, or Twin Falls.
Reports To: Clinical Supervisor
Position Overview:
Optima Health Care Systems is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Substance Use Counselor to provide treatment services to adults and adolescents struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders. This position will be based in an outpatient setting, where the counselor will work with clients to help them develop the necessary skills for coping with trauma, family and peer conflicts, mental health disorders, substance abuse, grief, relational issues, and community re-engagement. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based care and will have the ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary treatment team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Assessment & Treatment Planning:
- Utilize DSM-5 and ASAM Criteria to assess each client’s appropriate level of care and suitability for the agency’s offered programming.
- Develop and implement comprehensive, individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the clinical supervisor, addressing client-specific goals, strengths, and obstacles to recovery.
- Ensure that the treatment plans reflect the client’s progress and any newly identified treatment needs.
- Therapeutic Service Delivery:
- Provide individual and group therapy sessions in accordance with the client’s established care plan.
- Maintain accurate, detailed documentation of all client services provided within 24 hours of service delivery, including progress notes and updates.
- Regularly evaluate and document client progress toward treatment goals, making necessary adjustments to treatment plans as required.
- Ensure continuity of care by communicating regularly with clients' other healthcare providers, probation/parole officers, community service providers, and family members as specified in the client’s care plan.
- Client Discharge & Aftercare:
- Complete a client discharge summary within 5 days of discharge, including an evaluation of the client’s progress toward treatment goals, the assessed level of care at the time of discharge, and recommendations for continued care or referrals.
- Clinical Collaboration & Teamwork:
- Attend and actively participate in clinical team meetings, providing updates on client progress, challenges, and adjustments to treatment plans.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Supervisor to develop a Professional Development Plan within the first week of employment and adhere to the conditions of clinical supervision outlined in that plan.
- Provide updates on client progress and treatment plans as part of team meetings to ensure coordinated, effective care delivery.
- Professional & Ethical Standards:
- Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professional ethics, including adherence to confidentiality and privacy regulations related to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance clinical skills and knowledge of best practices in addiction treatment.
- Agency Development & Contributions:
- Assist in the identification and development of evidence-based treatment components and curricula within the agency.
- Contribute to the overall improvement of treatment services through participation in continuous quality improvement efforts.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Certifications/Licensure:
- SUDA, CADC, or ACADC certification (Required).
- Ability to pass an Enhanced Criminal Background Investigation through the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare (Required).
- Education & Experience:
- Previous experience working with populations experiencing substance use disorders (Required).
- Skilled in the use of DSM-5 and ASAM Criteria for assessment and treatment planning.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Ability to provide high-quality, client-centered therapy in both individual and group settings.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple cases simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a strong attention to detail in documentation.
- Positive, self-motivated, and responsible with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- A commitment to ethical practice and maintaining confidentiality in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with adolescents (preferred).
- Familiarity with evidence-based treatment models and trauma-informed care approaches.
- Previous experience in a multidisciplinary treatment setting (preferred).
Schedule:
- Full-time position, typically Monday through Friday, during regular business hours. Some flexibility may be required based on client needs.
