The Orange County Tax Administration Department has an opening for a Temporary Revenue Technician I. Under the regular supervision of the Collections Manager, an employee of this class is primarily responsible for taking tax payments from clients and applying to the appropriate account while providing excellent customer service. Does related work as required.

Greets and assists customers; accepts and receives payments from taxpayers and public assistance, in person and via the U.S. Postal Service, for taxes, stormwater and solid waste fees and applies to the proper accounts; makes all necessary notations in taxpayer files;
Explains payment policies to taxpayer and all applicable fees; verifies checks are good prior to taking for payment; and provides receipts for payments;
Processes mail received and forwards to the appropriate staff member; posts all payments received, including legal action payments, via postal carrier, lockbox and dropbox; Processes returned mail and tax bills; researches for current taxpayer addresses and updates files or flags "undeliverable";
Balances the cash drawer on a daily basis; researches and reconciles balance discrepancies.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of NC taxation laws.
Familiarity with County ordinances, municipal procedures, HIPPA and state laws pertaining to tax collection and beer and wine licensing;
Ability to effectively use standard office equipment and computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software;
Must have good office skills (i.e. typing, filing, organizational, accuracy and customer service);
Must have good math skills and the ability to handle money, process accounts receivables and balance a cash drawer;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) test equivalency AND one (1) year of experience in customer service, cashiering and computer.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
All offers of employment are conditional upon successful clearance of a background check. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.

Must have good math skills and the ability to handle money, process accounts receivables and balance a cash drawer;

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of standing, sitting, pushing, walking, bending, pulling, stooping, kneeling, lifting, crawling, carrying, typing, grasping, reaching, talking, hearing, handling and repetitive motions of the hands and wrist.
Ability to perform light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, perform accounting and extensive reading, and operate a computer terminal.
May be subject to possible hazards that include emotional stress due to the nature of interactions with clients, irate clients and/or family members who may be hostile, resistant or violent.
