Description

This position will work primarily as the morning or afternoon bus rider to support students in Children’s Services and support other OGC Day Program nursing needs as directed.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  •  Administer medications as ordered
  • Ride on Orange Grove buses or vehicles to support students/individuals medical needs.
  • Serve as a resource person to classrooms, the center and the community sites, as needed.
  • Assist in behavior management, according to established criteria and behavior plans.
  • Assist in family contact and child’s family contact (according to protocol).
  • Attend community outings to provide support as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate respect for students, individuals, parents and fellow staff members.
  • Ensure the safety of all students and individuals in case of fire or natural disaster.
  • Maintain equipment in a safe working condition, immediately report unsafe conditions to the LPN Manager/RN Supervisor.
  • Maintain a safe working environment. Make sure the work area is neat and in order.
  • Ensure hazardous items are placed out of the reach of the students and individuals or, if appropriate, in locked containers or Nurse Bus Bag. Investigate injuries either to the student, individual, or staff member, in order to prevent future re-occurrences.
  • Follow the agency's policies related to on the job injuries.
  • Maintain knowledge of apply proper body mechanics in everyday activities
  • Attend appropriate in-services as directed
  • Become familiar with and comply with State and Federal regulations as they pertain to the job position and work environment; cooperate with State survey teams as requested and as applicable.
  • In a timely manner, report concerns of abuse, neglect, mistreatment to the LPN Manager and/or Director of Compliance.
  • Utilize department supplies in a cost effective and efficient manner. Assist in keeping all work areas stocked with supplies needed.
  • Assist in maintaining the general cleanliness of the work area.
  • Consistently complete responsibilities in a timely manner, self-initiative is vital.
  • Be prompt to work and be trustworthy.
  • Understand the students and individuals come to school or day services for assistance in reaching his/her goals, which are outlined in the IEP/ISP.
  • Show interest in building relationships with each student/individual.
  • Support the goals of the each program area as an active team member and participate in the program planning and actualization.
  • Work with all staff and parents to assure healthy outcomes for students and individuals.
  • Keep the Day Program nurses, SPCs, other staff and the families informed about health related issues of the students. Discuss reasons for treatments, medications, etc.
  • Assist in educating all staff to understand students'/individuals' conditions.
  • Maintain an open communication with staff, parents/guardians as appropriate.
  • Contribute to and implement nursing care plans as developed for students and individuals.
  • Communicate referral information to parents or homes as indicated: the need for foot/nail care, etc.
  • Use medical protocol for decision making. Reports health concerns to the LPN Manager/RN Coordinator.
  • Monitor and provide reports for seizures. Complete seizure report forms for each observed seizure. Assist in seizure data gathering. Tum in reports to LPN Manager/RN Coordinator as they occur.
  • Document incident and accident reports as needed.
  • Assess health related situations and receive direction from LPN Manager /RN Coordinator, and Physician, as necessary. Obtain emergency assistance when necessary.
  • If indicated, administer oxygen, insulin, Diastat, or an Epi-pen as ordered, to any designated student or individual.
  • Maintain an accurate record of infections of students for the quarterly Infection Control reviews. Submit report of infection to the LPN Manager/RN Coordinator.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and utilize infection control policies, including practicing good hand washing technique.
  • Utilize the SOAP method of assessment and documentation.
  • Complete Nursing Logs for billing purposes, if applicable.
  • Work with other nurses to maintain an accurate and up-to-date nursing notebook that is kept in the nurse’s' bus bag.
  • Ensure the bus bag is equipped and stocked, prior to running a route. Notify LPN Manager/RN Coordinator if equipment is broken or missing.
  • Work cooperatively with the other Day Program nurses in assuring medications and or treatments, meds/supplies are available.
  • Assist in the administration of medications, respiratory treatments, and tube feedings for designated students and individuals.
  • Become knowledgeable about medication administration and tube feeding procedures and techniques, where applicable.
  • Dispose of contaminated syringes and items in the provided medical waste containers.
  • Complete a Medication Event Report when indicated and according to OGC and State Guidelines.
  • Assist in the maintenance of current orders for medications.
  • Accurately and timely, complete all required procedures and documentation of medication and feeding procedures.

Qualifications


TECHNICAL JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must have technical skills in medical nursing procedures, first aid and basic nursing principles. Must become knowledgeable of Orange Grove Center's protocols and procedures as outlined in the Policy & Procedure Manual. Must demonstrate the ability to utilize time in an effective and organized manner, and the desire to learn more about seizure disorders and the nature of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Health must be adequate, both mentally and physically to allow for efficient accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities. Physical examination, including TB skin test or chest x-ray, drug screen is required. This position requires stooping, sitting, and standing, lifting at least 50 pounds, pulling, and a moderate amount of walking.

 

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS: Work directly under the Supervision of the Day Services LPN Manager. Will also work in conjunction with and in cooperation with the Dept. Coordinators, SPCs, Case Managers, nursing, transportation and other staff as needed. Comply with HIPAA guidelines regarding written, electronic, and verbal confidentiality.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Appropriate education and licensing, plus minimum of one year of clinically relevant experience is required. Experience or certification working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is preferred. Will be required to attain BLS/CPR skills certification and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training. Overall health must be adequate to allow for accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities. Must meet all requirements for employment at Orange Grove Center.
