Job Title: Charge Nurse
Overview:
The Charge Nurse is directly responsible to the Administrator. Supervises and directs nursing care and all related activities of Oregon Specialists Surgery Center (OSSC) according to the policies, procedures, philosophy and objectives of the Center. The position works closely with the Medical Staff and the entire staff at the surgery center. This individual must have clear and concise communication skills; solid critical thinking skills; be able to effectively problem solve and handle multiple tasks at one time with timely follow through.
Position Scope:
This position’s responsibilities include management of the clinical services, all aspects of the environmental control, staff personnel, and materials and equipment. It also includes delegation of responsibilities and duties to personnel and maintaining a cost effective system of management.
Position requires flexibility in work hours to meet the needs of the facility; may include work in evenings.
Position Functions:
1. Administration – Plans, controls, directs and coordinates administrative duties to insure proper functioning of the clinical, Quality Improvement, Risk Management, and Infection Control areas of OSSC and personnel.
2. Patient Care – Supervises and is responsible for nursing care given to patients within the Center.
3. Orientation and In-service – Provides an orientation to new hires, and insures continuing education through in-services is completed at least annually.
4. Safety– Provides a safe environment for patients and personnel.
5. Material and Equipment: Provides and controls materials, supplies and equipment for successful operation of the clinical areas of the center
6. Personnel: Provides adequately trained and sufficient number of personnel to assist the surgeon and render safe preoperative and postoperative patient care.
7. Communication:Interacts well with staff, all other areas of the center, physicians, patients and the public.
8. Quality Improvement: Continuously analyzes and evaluates all nursing services to improve quality of patient care.
9. Peer Review: Oversees the peer review program and guarantees peer reviews are completed in a timely manner according to OSSC’s policy.
10. Maintenance/Environmental Services: Coordinates with the Administrator, activities and personnel for facility maintenance, medical equipment maintenance and janitorial cleanliness of the clinical areas
11. Staffing: Continuous oversight of the daily surgery schedule – looking forward to the following day, week, and month to assess patient (supplies, meds, and equipment) and staffing needs. Coordinates surgery schedule with all contracted services, medical reps, and anyone else needed to insure successful surgeries.
12. Executing Policies: Evaluation, reviewing, and executing policies and procedures to maintain Medicare Certification and AAAHC Accreditation.
13. Hiring:Screens clinical staff as vacancies occur with the help of the Administrator.
14. Pharmaceuticals:Responsible for overseeing the ordering of all drugs including controlled drugs.
15. Drills:Coordinates compliance with fire and safety regulations. Coordinates quarterly safety drills with Administrator and maintains records for these drills.
16. Computer Skills: Must have good computer skills, in order to maintain patients’ medical records and input details about patient interactions with Telephone Encounters, as needed to maintain up to date patient records.
Education and Experience:
Must be a Registered Nurse (RN). Experience as a manager or supervisor is highly desirable. Education at the baccalaureate or master’s degree level is desirable, but experience will be considered in lieu of a more formal education.
Physical Requirements:
Must have good general physical and emotional health. Must have good hearing and vision. Requires some standing and walking.
Personal:
Must be a mature, well-adjusted person who gets along with others and is able to direct others to accomplish facility goals. Should be skilled in organization and coordination of efforts and personnel and in the maintenance of interpersonal relationships. Must be able to show good judgment and initiative and be alert, adaptable and persistent to detail. Since the duties may demand odd hours, should be able to maintain a flexible schedule.
