This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Biological Science Research Technician 2: Sample Coordinator position for the Seed Lab in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Oregon State University ( OSU ).
OSU Seed Laboratory exists to provide quality control information to local to international seed customers, such as growers, cleaners, dealers, Oregon Seed Certification participants, Oregon Department of Agriculture, researchers, private companies or individuals and other various programs for the purposes of including but not limited to research, information, labeling, marketing and shipping. Seed testing for the Oregon Seed Certification Service is conducted through this Laboratory. The Laboratory serves the Oregon Department of Agriculture and other government agencies by conducting monitoring and regulatory testing and provides technical support to OSU and to the general public in numerous ways. The Laboratory provides technical training in the form of seed schools and workshops to various groups in Oregon, other states, or countries. The OSU Seed Laboratory enjoys national and international acclaim as a leader in seed testing procedures including research and development and seed identification.
The purpose of this position is to act as a representative of the OSU Seed Lab Sample Testing program and to support seed testing services provided by the Laboratory on a broad range of seed species and tests in the administrative unit. This position requires working knowledge of the Laboratory’s Quality Management System ( QMS ) and specific seed standards set by State and Federal law, USDA standards, Canadian Seed Testing Methods and Procedures, European Economic Community standards (EC), the International Seed Testing Association rules ( ISTA ), the Association of Official Seed Analysts ( AOSA ) and Society of Commercial Seed Technologists ( SCST ) rules and procedures and Oregon Seed Certification Service ( OSCS ) Handbook procedures and standards pertaining to seed testing.
The position provides assistance and support to the Purity, Special Testing, Germination, and Administration Units of the OSU Seed Laboratory. The position serves as a member of the Seed Lab team who all work efficiently and timely in their actions and determinations as the Lab testing units depend on them to move the samples through the Lab so they can effectively produce results and meet customer expectations for turnaround times. The position is responsible for test sample preparation, weigh station, sample storage, equipment maintenance and calibration, treated seed chemical records, quality management documentation and record keeping, and adhering to the OSU Seed Lab Quality Policy and Quality Management System.
The position serves as a part of hiring committees for student employees, providing lead work duties by training, assigning, and approving work, and developing schedules to ensure proper coverage for the services they support.
The incumbent must be able to work respectfully as a member of the Seed Lab team, be approachable for collaboration and training in order to contribute to the growth of the program and the entire Seed Lab team. All Seed Lab staff are responsible for ensuring the highest level of quality in all work products; creating a positive public reputation for the OSU Seed Lab and providing exceptional customer service.

What We Require
Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
What You Will Need
Two years of college-level courses in Biology, Horticulture, Environmental Sciences, Agriculture, Natural Resources, or related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Additional Minimum Qualifications:
Previous seed testing experience, such as the ability to identify most common crops and weeds tested in this Laboratory. Ability to perform basic separations on most crops.
Experience with Quality Management Programs and following SOPs.
Possess a good understanding of ISTA Seed Laboratory Accreditation System, or other quality assurance systems.
Experience with and ability to maintain testing equipment and perform routine checks and maintenance on equipment.
Previous experience working with inventories, organizing and supplies.
Previous experience working with the following: Microsoft Suite, custom database and iPad applications.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Incumbent will be expected to sit or stand at a workstation for extended periods of time.
Ability to perform repetitive motions, bend, lift and carry trays of seeds or other items up to 40 lbs., carry trays of seeds up and down stairs, occasionally lift trays of seeds up to 20 lbs. overhead.
This position involves working around fumes, odors, dust, noise, and pesticide chemicals.
Occasionally, special projects may require some outdoor work.
Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, but may fluctuate depending on sample load
Must be able to work an irregular/flexible schedule, including overtime, depending on work volume/requirements.
The peak season is typically July through December. As sample numbers drop after the peak season employee may experience a reduced FTE [or reduced hours].
