Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Viticulture Student Research Assistant for the Agricultural Sciences and Marine Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

  • Perform routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of viticulture research
  • Assist with viticulture research data collection to understand how vineyard cultural practices influence grapevine physiology and berry composition
  • Assist in field data collection, conduct laboratory assays, enter and organize research data
  • This position will be located in the lab on campus, and at research sites off campus and in commercial vineyards.

Position Duties

Position Duties (30% Field Work) Tasks may include

  • vine phenology assessment, counting and measuring vine growth and cluster architecture (in-field and in-lab)
  • water potential measures (using a pressure chamber or porometer)
  • soil moisture data collection (using a capacitance probe and data loggers)
  • vine tissue sampling, pruning weights, pruning and vine management
  • Successfully complete and maintain appropriate farm, lab and campus safety training and certifications
  • Field data collection will be conducted off-campus in commercial vineyard research plots and / or the OSU Farms ranging from 40-70 miles from campus
  • University motor pool vehicles will be used for all university business
  • 60% Laboratory / Program Work Will include

  • data entry from field data collection
  • data summarization, sample measurements and preparation in the lab
  • wet chemistry analysis of fruit and / or plant tissues
  • some microscope work.
  • Assist in developing tables, figures, or graphics for Extension and outreachmaterials, proofing and editing documents, and more. Training for all lab / program tasks will be provided.
  • 10% Responsible for helping with other tasks in the lab including cleaning, archiving samples, and organizing.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
  • High School student : Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student : 6 credit hours per term
  • Undergraduate international student : 12 credit hours per term
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School : 5 credit hours per term
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School : 9 credit hours per term
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
  • Additional Required Qualifications

  • Course work in Horticulture, Viticulture, Botany, Crop and Soil Science, Agronomy, Plant Science, or closely related field of plant sciences
  • Must have the ability to walk on uneven terrain. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift, push, or pull at 30 lbs
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a group and independently
  • Must be reliable and professional
  • Must not be allergic to sulfur.

    OSU will conduct a review of the National Sex Offender Public website prior to hire.
