What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Technician position at Orion Veterinary Clinic Inc?
Orion Veterinary Clinic is a mixed animal veterinary clinic serving the Quad City area. We provide high quality veterinary care for livestock, horses, companion animals and some exotics. We are searching for a full time Veterinary Technician to join our fast paced growing practice. Our current staff consists of two full time veterinarian, and a team of dedicated technicians and receptionist. The clinic is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, 8 am to Noon on Saturday and closed on Sunday. Patients are seen by appointment only with the expectation of emergencies. Veterinary Technician are expected to work a 4-day workweek and some Saturdays.
Veterinary Technician Duties
- Taking and Recording Vital Signs
- Collecting Stool Samples
- Performing Laboratory Tests
- Sterilizing Equipment
- Administering Medications, Injections, Intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscularly, and orally
- Collecting and Recording Animal’s Medical Histories
- Trimming Nails and Grooming Animals
- Feeding and Walking Animals
- Removing Sutures and staples
- Cleaning Wounds and Changing Dressing
- Provides compassionate care to patients.
- Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
- Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas or vehicle.
- Assists the doctor in medical and surgical procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids
- Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
- Assists in restraining pets (horses, animals) when necessary.
- Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, ear cytology, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records
- Takes radiographs
- Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders
- Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
- Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
- Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
- Assists other staff members as required.
- Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
- Perform dental prophylaxis
