Job Description

MISSION STATEMENT

The Criminal District Court Pretrial Services Program serves the community by providing objective information for bail decisions, improving court appearances, and advancing public safety.

Position Summary

The Pretrial Services Program is under the programming arm of Criminal District Court’s Court Intervention Services (CIS) Department. The Senior Pretrial Intake Specialist will oversee a team of Pretrial Intake Specialists to ensure the accuracy of the Public Safety Assessments conducted on all arrestees attending First Appearance Hearings. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and understanding of the Public Safety Assessment to ensure the reports' accuracy and fidelity. This role, which reports directly to the Pretrial Services Director, is instrumental in the training and continued development of intake staff, thereby contributing to the safety and well-being of our community.

Education Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field with valid accreditation (if applicable) is required.

Experience Requirement:

Previous supervisory experience is a plus. Candidates should possess at least two (2) years of relevant experience in training, auditing, and engaging with diverse populations. This experience should include developing and delivering training programs, conducting comprehensive audits, and effectively communicating with individuals from various backgrounds. Having previous supervisory experience is an advantage, as it indicates strong leadership skills and the ability to manage and mentor team members effectively. This position reports to the Pretrial Services Director and the CIS Administrator. This position is contingent upon clearance by criminal history background check.

  • Excellent communication skills, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work efficiently under strict time constraints
  • Ability to work with persons in distress under stressful circumstances.
  • Experience working with system-involved individuals.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with the judiciary, court staff, and stakeholders.
  • Handle sensitive matters with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Attain knowledge and awareness of and abide by the Court’s employee handbook.
  • Work effectively with diverse populations, including sensitivity to gender, racial, and cultural differences, immigrant or refugee status, as well as individuals with physical, mental, or emotional disabilities.
  • Use standard office and business equipment including, but not limited to, personal computers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, copiers, scanners, fax machines, etc.
  • Effectively communicate in person, on the phone, via email, and other electronic devices on a continual and repetitive basis.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain security clearance from Louisiana State Police and Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight of the Intake Specialist Team.
  • Train and mentor new Intake Specialists, providing growth and development opportunities.
  • Provide continuous assistance to the existing Intake Team.
  • Provide clear and effective verbal and written communication.
  • Review Public Safety Assessments daily.
  • Audits Public Safety Assessments quarterly for Quality Assurance and communicates results to ensure fidelity of the assessments.
  • Meet with the Pretrial Services’ Director to actively participate and provide valuable input in developing and/or improving the Pretrial Services Program.
  • Interview arrestees before First Appearance Hearings to gather relevant information.
  • Prepare, review, and summarize criminal history records of arrestees at First Appearance Hearings.
  • Prepare Public Safety Assessments and respond to inquiries from the court.
  • Accurately enter and/or retrieve information from the court management system in a timely, detailed manner.
  • Assist arrestees as resources permit.
  • Present Public Safety Assessments to Judges and/or Commissioners before and during court proceedings.
  • Provide public access to Public Safety Assessments while maintaining the utmost confidentiality of court information and records according to state law and court rules.
  • Comply with all court, department, and work policies and rules. This includes, but is not limited to, attendance, safety, a drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Court Services Administrator and Pretrial Services Director.

Physical Requirements:

  • This position is in an office environment.
  • Regularly required to sit, walk, and stand.
  • Sitting 70%, Standing 15%, and Walking 15%.
