SUMMARY
The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody,

The Human Resources (HR) Generalist position is located is the OPSO Office of Human Resources, and
reports to the Director of Human Resources. The incumbent may be task to perform a variation of HR
functions and duties that includes but not limited to Benefits Support, Recruiting, Employee
Relations, Processing of Personnel Actions, File Room Maintenance and Support, New Hire
Orientation, Performance Management, Employee Engagement Program Support and other task as
assigned. The position is non-exempt.
SALARY
The salary for the Human Resources Generalist ranges from $45,000 to $55,000. The salary for a
selected applicant will be aligned accordingly and commensurate with an applicant’s knowledge,
skills, experience, certifications and education requirements of the subject position.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Benefits Support:
- Assist with the administration of all OPSO benefits and retirement programs.
- Maintains records relating to employee benefits; enrolls employees into programs; and
processes new hire and benefit paperwork.
- Performs quality checks of benefits-related data. Assists employees regarding benefits claim
issues and plan changes.
- Distributes benefits enrollment materials and determines eligibility.
- Process and track information in support of policies and benefits such as Leave of Absences,
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Worker Compensation, and other leave issues.
- Process various paperwork, especially regarding disability, FMLA absences, and employee life
status changes
- Research, analyze, and administer healthcare plans and wellness programs, from medical and
dental benefits to disability and family leave.
- Coordinate non-salary employee compensation like retirement plans and pensions.
- Ensure the accuracy of all benefits enrollments and assist with the open enrollment rocess.
Processing of Personnel Actions:
- Processes a variety of personnel actions (i.e., new hires, promotions, transfers,
separations, etc.) and ensures the personnel action forms are fully signed, approved, placed in the
employee’s personnel folder, and electronically uploaded in the HR information system where actions
are processed (i.e., ADP, etc.).
File Room Maintenance and Support:
- Ensures employee records and personnel files are properly maintained, current, regulatory
compliant and filed orderly.
Employee Engagement Program Support:
- Plans and coordinates special employer sponsored activities and employee engagement
initiatives.
- Implements employee recognition programs as task.
- Prepares and distributes information to inform employees of various programs, special
employer sponsored activities.
Performance Management:
- Assist with the OPSO performance management program.
- Providing guidance and technical assistance to managers, supervisors, and employees orally or
in writing on specific policies, regulations, process or issues related to performance management
and other human resource procedures.
Other Task as Assigned to Include but not Limited to the Following:
- Provides support and assistance to the Director of Human Resources to include establishing,
maintaining and producing various reports and conducting analysis as task.
- Creates reports using the human resources information systems (HRIS) as assigned.
- Maintains listing of approved positions along with assigned salary grade levels
- Conduct exit interviews and recommend corrective action if necessary.
- Reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Ensures all required compliance and internal employee communications postings are current and
up-to-date.
- Performs other HR related duties as assigned.
Miscellaneous:
- May be assigned to perform duties of higher or lower level classifications in this or related
class series and/or perform duties on a temporary or acting basis in accordance with policy and/or
act as a lead worker.
- Must effectively communicate in writing; authoring various documents (Investigations,
incident reporting, memorandum, and Post Orders)
- Demonstrate a strong ability and willingness to listen to subordinate supervisors and staff,
remaining open minded and attentive to Issues.
Responsible for knowing and complying with all OPSO safety rules and for attending
safety meetings.
- Performs other related Human Resources duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS
- High School graduate or GED
- Prefer Bachelor's degree in Human Resources
- Three to five years of experience in Human Resources or related field
- Knowledge of HR guidelines and common practices
