General Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and proactive chemist to join our growing medicinal chemistry/bioconjugation drug discovery team. In this laboratory-based position, the successful candidate will partner with both internal and external medicinal chemistry teams to generate innovative solutions to synthetic and medicinal chemistry challenges within the context of ADC drug discovery projects. The successful candidate will be skilled in the art of organic synthesis and familiar with modern synthetic methods, analytical data interpretation, troubleshooting reactions, and purifications. The candidate will also demonstrate aptitude for learning new therapy areas as Orum expands its pipeline.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
- Design, synthesize, and characterize novel drug-like molecules utilizing medicinal chemistry knowledge and an understanding of ADME, pharmacokinetics, optimal physicochemical properties, and AI/ML predictive tools.
- Design and synthesize novel conditional release linkers and payload-linker combinations for bioconjugation chemistry.
- Support our internal and external synthetic chemistry teams in troubleshooting and proposing alternative synthetic routes.
- Apply structure-based drug design and computational and modeling approaches to prioritize syntheses.
- Analyze screening data, elucidate structure activity relationships using multi-parameter analysis, perform literature reviews, design, propose, and implement medicinal chemistry plans, and coordinate chemistry and biology data to drive the SAR optimization cycle toward project goals.
- Support the project team efforts on compound progression, nominate/ prioritize lead compounds for in vitro and in vivo biological and ADME assessment.
- Contribute to the chemistry and bioconjugation team organization, productivity, and expertise through collaboration and generation and exchange of innovative ideas.
- Present scientific updates and effectively communicate research findings in internal and external collaborators project team meetings and contribute to strategic R&D decisions.
- Contribute to the development of intellectual property and assist in patent drafting and/ or scientific publications.
- Maintain proper electronic notebook and sample management record keeping.
- Maintain and promote a culture of safe laboratory practices and laboratory citizenship.
- Contribute to the build-out and upkeep of an expanding laboratory through maintaining shared equipment, assisting with general laboratory housekeeping, and developing processes for improving workflow efficiency.
- Mentor and support junior team members.
Skills, Abilities & Competencies
- Experience in the biopharmaceutical industry.
- Strong track record of achievement in the synthesis of complex molecules and/or synthetic route optimizations, with deep knowledge of modern synthetic & analytical techniques.
- Proven track record of scientific contributions including peer reviewed publications, patents and/or presentations.
- Experience with the selection and application of appropriate purification techniques (flash chromatography, HPLC, SFC, etc.), QC and structural elucidation methods (LC/MS, NMR, etc.).
- Some experience with computational chemistry methods is preferred.
- Experience with design and synthesis of conditional release linkers and/or prodrugs is preferred.
- Current knowledge of the key Medicinal Chemistry principles and physicochemical properties of drug-like matter, and a strong understanding of biology, pharmacology, drug metabolism, and pharmacokinetics
- Experience with various small molecules drug discovery modalities such as small molecule inhibitors, PPI inducers including PROTACs and MGs, etc. Familiarity with antibody drug conjugates is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively collaborate in a highly matrixed environment.
- Collaborative team player with strong communication and time-management skills, the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, and the ability to effectively collaborate with a global multidisciplinary team.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Education- Ph.D. or equivalent degree in organic/medicinal chemistry or a related field with minimum 2 years' industrial experience, MS degree with 8 years', or BS degree with 11 years'
