JOB SUMMARY

 

The Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at Othello High School serves as an integral member of the administrative team, providing leadership in both academics and athletics. This role supports student achievement by ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment while overseeing the development, implementation, and supervision of the school’s athletic programs. The position requires strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills to support students, staff, coaches, and the broader school community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Assistant Principal Responsibilities

  • Assist the principal in leading and managing school operations, including student discipline, staff supervision, and instructional leadership.
  • Support the implementation of district and school policies, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to improve instructional practices and student achievement.
  • Monitor and support student behavior, enforcing discipline policies and providing restorative interventions as needed.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, and community stakeholders to foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and academic excellence.
  • Oversee school safety procedures, including emergency preparedness and crisis response.
  • Assist with the hiring, evaluation, and professional development of staff.
  • Support student services, including Special Education, Section 504, and Multilingual Learners (ML).
  • Participate in school events, community meetings, and district initiatives to promote a positive school climate.

Athletic Director Responsibilities

  • Oversee the entire high school athletic program, ensuring alignment with WIAA (Washington Interscholastic Activities Association) regulations, district policies, and school values.
  • Recruit, hire, evaluate, and support coaches, fostering a culture of excellence and sportsmanship.
  • Develop and manage the athletic budget, including equipment, facilities, transportation, and officiating expenses.
  • Ensure student-athletes meet academic and eligibility requirements, collaborating with counselors and teachers to support academic success.
  • Organize and oversee athletic scheduling, including practices, games, tournaments, and facility usage.
  • Promote and support equitable participation in athletics, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all students.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the school, district administration, WIAA, parents, and community organizations.
  • Develop and enforce safety protocols, including injury prevention, emergency response, and risk management procedures.
  • Coordinate fundraising efforts and booster club activities to support athletic programs.
  • Foster school spirit and sportsmanship, ensuring positive representation of Othello High School in competitions and events.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in educational administration or related field
  • Washington State Principal certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Prior successful teaching experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and management qualities
  • Minimum of three years of teaching, coaching, or administrative experience, preferably at the secondary level.
  • Experience in athletic administration, coaching, or related leadership roles preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, families, and community members.
  • Knowledge of WIAA regulations, athletic program management, and student eligibility requirements.
  • Understanding of high school curriculum, instructional best practices, and student support services.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to manage conflict, mediate disputes, and foster a positive school culture.

Working Conditions & Schedule

  • This is a full-time, year-round administrative position.
  • Evening and weekend work required to supervise athletic events and school activities.
  • Frequent interaction with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Requires mobility within the school building and athletic facilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Mobility: Ability to move frequently throughout the school campus, athletic facilities, and event venues.
  • Standing & Walking: Prolonged periods of standing and walking, particularly during school supervision, athletic events, and practices.
  • Lifting & Carrying: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally (e.g., sports equipment, event supplies, facility materials).
  • Climbing & Bending: Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and occasional climbing (e.g., bleachers, stairs, ladders for facility inspections).
  • Hearing & Speech: Clear verbal communication to interact effectively with students, staff, coaches, and the community in a noisy environment.
  • Vision: Sufficient vision to supervise students, monitor athletic events, review documents, and use a computer.
  • Dexterity: Ability to use a computer, operate standard office and athletic equipment, and complete paperwork.
  • Environmental Conditions: Exposure to varying weather conditions while supervising outdoor sports and events.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Starting Date: 2025-2026 School Year (260 total contracted days)
Salary: $136,827 - $149,645 annual salary. Based on education and experience Per OAA CBA - 2025-2026 Salary Schedule 
Retirement: Pension through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems
