Teacher Consultant-Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program(s)

General Description: The Teacher Consultant for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (TC-DHH) will provide direct or consultative services to students throughout Ottawa Area ISD who are eligible for deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) services. The Teacher Consultant in this position will also provide consultation and professional learning to general education and special education teachers, administrators, and parents/guardians to support students who are deaf/hard of hearing.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with all stakeholders including, but not limited to local instructional staff, students, parents and families, district representatives, and other agencies within the community.
  • Support evaluation teams with initial and re-evaluation processes. Conduct formal and informal assessments of students to assist in the determination of Deaf/Hard of Hearing eligibility, determining the present level of educational performance and the impact of hearing loss in the school environment.
  • Complete and present a written evaluation report to parents/guardians and the local school district within required timelines.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of student IEPs including present levels, area of need, accommodations, goals and objectives, special considerations, and service times.
  • Assist in the implementation of supports that can be used successfully in the general education classroom.
  • Establish and maintain records including, but not limited to, student service times, consultation, lesson plans, and student data to show progress on IEP goals/objectives.
  • Complete and maintain all annual, periodic, and specifically requested reports, schedules, and summaries, in a timely manner.
  • Provide materials and in-service training to administrators, support staff, teachers, and parents regarding the characteristics and educational implications of a hearing loss.
  • Work collaboratively with IEP team members to monitor the impact the hearing loss may have on the student’s educational progress.
  • Consult with other personnel including classroom teachers, principals, other ancillary staff/school staff, and parents to assist students based on individual needs.
  • Support instructional responsibilities of staff through the provision of professional development, consultations, and coaching/modeling of the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional strategies and materials specific to DHH.
  • Provide academic coaching, support and/or direct instruction to students on caseload.
  • Observe the student in the classroom to evaluate attending skills, coping/repair strategies, use of residual hearing, and functional use of hearing with and without hearing assistive technology.
  • Instruct the student and teaching staff on the use and care of hearing aids and hearing assistive technology and assist in the maintenance of such.
  • Collaborate with the Educational Audiologist to monitor students’ audiological needs using knowledge of basic audiology.
  • Travel to meet job requirements.
  • Locate and share resources relevant to the individual, group and family need to support the provision of FAPE in the least restrictive environment.
  • Actively participate in professional learning communities, sharing available and relevant resources with colleagues and staff.

Essential Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years teaching DHH with a Master's Degree in Education to meet the Teacher Consultant requirements.
  • Must meet Michigan Department of Education requirements for full/temporary approval as a Teacher Consultant. Teachers taking part in the MDELIO DHH Consortium are encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and the diverse needs of students who are DHH. Ideal candidate would be proficient in ASL.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills including proficiency in basic computer skills and web-based applications.
  • Deep working knowledge of other adaptive equipment required.
  • Possess the skills and desire to work in a collaborative team with others.
  • Experienced teacher having been rated Effective of Highly Effective required.

This position is part of our DHH team of Teacher Consultants for the DHH and Educational Audiologists. 190 days per year.

Salary: $68,000 - $90,000
