DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Educational Specialist, Job Class: Administrative, Department: Center for Teaching and Learning, FLSA status: Full-time, 40 hrs/wk, exempt

Otterbein University is looking for an Educational Specialist, which will supports faculty in creating pedagogically sound learning experiences. The Educational Specialist creates educational developmental opportunities and works closely with the director and assistant director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, CTL staff, and other units on campus to develop, promote, and deliver effective educational development programming

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Faculty development ·

  • Encourages and supports faculty exploration, adoption, and effective use of various pedagogical approaches
  • Provides specialized small group and individualized consulting, coaching, advising, and guidance for faculty members on uses of digital learning tools and strategies
  • Works collaboratively with other CTL staff to develop and deliver faculty development programs, such as book groups, learning communities, teaching circles, interactive workshops, and resource development
  • Supports CTL initiatives to promote inclusive teaching and learning
  • Manages logistics for events, such as scheduling, registration, facilities, and resources
Digital learning and design
  • Explores and evaluates new digital learning environments and pedagogical practices which enhance current teaching and learning
  • Collaborates and consults with departments, committees, and other units to plan and implement strategies for incorporating digital learning and design at the University and programmatic level
  • Applies evidence-based practice and theory to faculty digital learning and design projects
  • Develops written and/or multimedia resources to support faculty digital learning and design projects

Collaborations

  • Maintains close connections and good communication with the office of Information and Technology Services, and works collaboratively with them on projects as appropriate

  • Participates with the CTL staff, ITS, and other relevant campus units and committees in decisions about the priority levels of various instructional technology, pedagogy and digital learning projects, accurately assessing the potential of the technology for adding value to teaching and learning and considering the costs associated with it in terms of personnel and financial investment

  • Coordinates efforts with other campus departments and offices, including participating on ad hoc committees.

Assessment

  • Engages, together with CTL staff, in ongoing documentation, assessment, and improvement of the work of the unit

  • Supports faculty assessment of their courses and student learning through recognized, designed processes · Assist with testing and implementation of emerging teaching and learning technologies. · Documents effectiveness through client evaluation questionnaires and surveys


Internal support for CTL

  • Works as part of the CTL team to support services and programs as necessary.

  • Works in collaboration with CTL staff and ITS to maintain technology in the CTL Studio

  • Collaborates with Asst. Director on CTL’s online presence through the website, social networking, electronic newsletters, and other publications

  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in education or related fields, or equivalent education or experience. 1-3 years documented experience teaching or working with faculty members in higher education to support teaching and learning.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
N/A

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must demonstrate ability to write clear, concise, accurate documentation. Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Must be extremely competent in general math and able to manage complex budget tracking and calculations.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft and Apple desktop operating systems, learning management systems, audio/video editing software, and other teaching and learning technologies.

REASONING ABILITY:
Must be able to troubleshoot independently; to think and work proactively; to make sound judgments; to solve problems and design materials creatively; must demonstrate excellent attention to detail; must be a team player and interact collegially with co-workers and other constituencies. Must be diplomatic and discrete.
