What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sandy position at Our Place Support?
Sandy has recently joined us as our new Advice Service Coordinator, a role which involves managing casework, supporting Advisors and representing the Advice Service within the community.
Our advice service aims to support the most vulnerable members of our community to navigate through support systems in relation to benefits, housing and unemployment.
Previously a service that has been run by volunteers led by a part time coordinator, Our Place Advice Service now welcomes Sandy full time, and will be welcoming two additional staff advisors, thanks to funding from the National Lottery through Reaching Communities.
Sandy has a wealth of experience in support roles, which will certainly be useful for ourgrowing Advice Service. In Melbourne, Sandy worked for the Victorian Government, within the disability sector, managing a residential service for people with learning difficulties.
She then managed a day program service in an institution prior to the residents’ move into the community, and completed accredited training so that she could train staff to work within this services.
Sandy’s commitment to support was demonstrated further in 2007, following Australia’s devastating bush fires, when she became a case manager for those who were impacted by this life-changing disaster.
She worked with people who had lost everything, including their family, homes, and possessions.Sandy also has plenty of experience in volunteering for charities.
COVID-19 hit during this time and Sandy saw first-hand the impact that the pandemic had on on the most vulnerable people in our society.
Similarly, our Advice Service saw the repercussions of the pandemic, and now cost of living crisis, on our community, and has developed and adapted due to the growing need in support.
focussing our support on those that need it most and helping people to navigate support systems to receive the help they need.
Sandy describes the most rewarding elements of her work as being able to help people, to be useful , and pointing people in the right direction if we can’t offer the direct support they’re looking for.
